Let it glow, let it glow, let it glow

You know what the Hygienic’s Salon des Independants is. Now imagine that same show illuminated only with black lights. That’s the premise behind Hygienic’s “Black ‘n Blue Light Gallery” event taking place simultaneously with the Salon des Independants show from Saturday until Feb. 11.

In the same Salon fashion, artists with black light-specific work are invited to display their pieces at the Credabel Gallery, where already installed black lights will electrify the dayglo paintings, fluorescent sculptures and whatever else might be submitted — something, we’re sure, when paired with a space already populated with 20 salt-water fish tanks of glowing and brightly colored coral, will be a sight to behold.

To that end, the gallery will also function as a celebration space on Saturday night with a wild beach party scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Actual beach sand will be brought into the space along with a lifeguard chair from Harkness Park. The mess the morning after should be glorious, but if it isn’t your responsibility to clean up, you might as well enjoy. Music will be provided by DJ Benjamin, as well as a live performance from New London artist Amy Hannum. Details beyond that are top secret, according to Hygienic director Sarah McKay, who says she herself doesn’t know what else will happen.
