Alvin Manter
Ledyard — Alvin “Al” M. Manter of Ledyard, passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 10, 2018, at the Pendleton Health and Rehabilitation Center in Mystic.
Al was born on March 6, 1932, in Concord, Mass., the son of George and Alpha Manter. He attended Concord schools, Ohio State University and the University of Maryland. At the beginning of the Korean War, in 1950, he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving four years, at three locations, Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada, Columbus, Ohio and England, as an airplane mechanic.
In Parkersburg, W. Va., June, 1960, he married Carmen Jean (Amos) Manter, who predeceased him in August 2014. He is survived by two sons, Alan of Ledyard, David and his wife Heather of Norwich, and his daughter, Carmen of Cape Coral, Fla.; two sisters, Arline and her husband John of Concord, Mass., and Virginia “Ginny” Hardy of Charlton, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Michael Manter and Collin Manter, both of Norwich.
Al continued on for 35 years with Trans World Airlines, contracted to the Navy. Eventually becoming area manager for Sato Travel, his home office location was the Naval Submarine Base in New London. Al was in charge of all Naval official airline travel for 22 offices in the Northeast, covering Iceland to Philadelphia. He retired in 1996. During his career he had the opportunity to travel extensively.
His greatest accomplishment was building his own house from scratch without taking out a mortgage. His hobbies were building and repairing computers and collecting airline memorabilia.
Al was an active member of Ledyard Congregational Church for more than 40 years. He was proud to serve as a deacon. He was also a member of Ledyard Lions Club for many years. He served on the Bill Memorial Library committee.
