POLICE: BENNIE DOVER SHOOTING COMMENT POSES NO DANGER

-

New London — A Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School student on Wednesday made comments about a shooting at the school that police determined did not pose any danger to students, according to an email sent to parents Wednesday afternoon.

Police charged the student with breach of peace in connection with the incident, according to New London police Capt. Brian Wright.

Students reported hearing their classmate make the comment to school staff, who contacted administrators.

School staff “immediately initiated safety measures to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” the email said.

Police found no immediate danger, and school officials made counselors available to students. Black Point Road, Apt. 38, is the accused.

According to police, officers were called to 127 Black Point Road about 10:15 p.m. for a reported domestic disturbance. The caller said a man intentionally crashed his car, was making suicidal comments and may have entered another resident’s home.

Police said they found no evidence that Crosby had entered a home without permission but did find reason to believe he had crashed his car into another vehicle.

Crews took Crosby to the hospital for treatment. Police later charged him with second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and second-degree harassment.

Last month, police charged Crosby with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol after he allegedly struck a vehicle on West Main Street and continued driving. He also is facing charges of evading responsibility and following too closely in the case, which is pending in New London Superior Court.

Released on a $10,000 nonsurety bond in the most recent case, Crosby was due in court Tuesday. It’s unclear whether he made it to the scheduled appearance. firearms.

Police obtained a warrant for Burtis’ arrest and on Tuesday charged him with second-degree breach of peace. Held on a $5,000 surety bond, he was scheduled to appear Wednesday in Norwich Superior Court.

Burtis is one of multiple teenagers in the region whom police have arrested this month because of comments they made.

Last week, Ledyard police charged a 17-year-old with second-degree threatening and second-degree breach of peace after he allegedly said something along the lines of, “I could buy an AR-15.”

Earlier this week, Old Saybrook police arrested a 17-year-old whose comments and actions concerned several parents and students. Police said while the comments didn’t directly threaten any school campus in town, officials remanded the student to state custody and won’t permit the student on school property until court and/or school officials deem it appropriate.

The teenager in that case is facing a charge of breach of peace.
