Eastern CT Eagles skate to 3-3 tie, wrap up NHC title

New London — The Eastern CT Eagles tied Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks 3-3 in a high school hockey game on Sunday night at Dayton Arena.

The Eagles (13-3-3) clinched the Nutmeg Hockey Conference regular-season title and earned a firstround bye in the NHC tournament. Trent Hughson, Kyle Jacobson and Will Cannella had goals, Rylin Fowler made 25 saves and Quenten Dean, Devyn Jordan, Cannella and Ashton Baltes had assists for the Eagles.

The Eagles had their six-game winning streak snapped with a 10-2 loss to Wethersfie­ld/Middletown/Rocky Hill/Plainville on Saturday night. Riley Jordan and Cannella scored and Jacobson and Dean had assists.

College wrestling

• Coast Guard had a record four wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Division III championsh­ips with its seventh-place finish at the Northeast Regionals. Advancing to the nationals and earning All-Region honors were Owen McClave (133 pounds), Nick Remke (165), AJ Aeberli (174) and Jonathan Wagner (197). Chris Sullivan (157) took fourth place and earned All-Region honors for the second year in a row.

Sullivan fell to Tyler Gazway of Roger Williams 11-2 but graduates with 101 victories, becoming the first wrestler since Nate Giorgio in 2015 to win 100 matches in his career. Aeberli earned Coast Guard's top finish taking second by beating Malik Settles of New England College after a review with three seconds left gave Settles the two deciding points. The nationals are in Cleveland on March 9-10.

Men's swimming

• Coast Guard freshman Eric Fuhs broke the school record and won the 200 breaststro­ke championsh­ip on the fourth and final day of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Championsh­ip as Coast Guard placed second for the second consecutiv­e season. Fuhs, who won the 100 breaststro­ke NEWMAC championsh­ip on Saturday night, won the championsh­ip in the 200 breaststro­ke with a time of 2:01.42. He broke the school record in the morning preliminar­ies with a time of 2:00.88.

Joe Rodriguez earned All-conference honors with a second place finish in the 100 freestyle by posting a time of 45.41 and Taylor Rowe was second in the 1,650 freestyle in 15:47.88 to earn All-conference honors. The Bears 400 freestyle relay of John Feller, Joe Rodriguez, John Pompay and Patrick Jackson broke the school record with a time of 3:03.92. Jackson tied the school record with time of 1:51.07 to place seventh in the 200 backstroke. Ross Garrett was fourth in the 200 butterfly (1:54.64) and Owen Gibson was sixth (1:55.81).

Women's swimming

• Coast Guard's Kristen Young earned All-conference honors with a second place finish in the 100 freestyle in 52.19 as the Bears placed fifth of ten teams at the NEWMAC Championsh­ip. The Bears 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Sarah Passilla, Young, freshman Hannah Fernandes and freshman Emily Benson took third place with a time of 3:32.40. Benson was also fifth in the 1,650 freestyle in 17:21.94.

Men's basketball

• St. Thomas More qualified for the New England Preparator­y School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class AAA tournament. The Chancellor­s (19-15) are the third seed and play at No. 2 Northfield Mount Hermon in a semifinal Saturday at 2 p.m.

Black Wolves win

• Despite having the worst record in the National Lacrosse League, the host Vancouver Stealth gave the New England Black Wolves all they could handle on Saturday night. The Black Wolves snapped a three-game losing streak with a 12-11 victory, winning on Stephan Leblanc's goal 45 seconds into overtime.

New England (5-4) never led in regulation and Vancouver (1-10) took a 4-0 lead. Johnny Powless, acquired in a trade w

ith Georgia last Tuesday, had two goals and an assist, Leblanc scored four goals and Colton Watkinson had two goals for New England.

College baseball

• No. 20 UConn completed a doublehead­er sweep on Saturday night with a 6-4 win over Southeaste­rn Louisiana in the second game. Chris Winkel hit a three-run homer, former Wheeler standout Troy Stefanski had a solo homer and Chase Gardner struck out five over five innings for his first win for the Huskies (4-2).
