Mariners riding a wave

• Mitchell College landed three players on the All-New England Collegiate Conference men’s basketball team. Junior Domenico Santiago, the league’s leading rebounder, became the fourth Mariner in program history to make the first team, averaging career-highs for points (19.3) and rebounds (a league-leading 11.1) per game. He also had a conference best 15 double-doubles and converted 71 percent from the field, ranking third in the country in Division III.

Senior Alan Morgan and sophomore Hasani Williams were on the second team, the first all-conference honor for both. Morgan led the league in assists (6.3 per game) and finished as the program’s all-time assist leader (557) while also averaging 7.1 points. Williams averaged career-highs for points (17.9) and rebounds (9.4). In addition, senior Colizel Lewis was named to the all-sportsmans­hip team for the Mariners, who finished 14-13.

• The NECC also selected its all-conference women’s basketball team. Junior Francesca Pinard and sophomore Haley Garcia made the third team, both for the first time in their careers. Garcia led the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game while Pinard averaged a career-high 7.7 rebounds and 8.7 points and recorded a team-best seven double-doubles. Freshman Marissa Sweeney was named to the all-sportsmans­hip team.

• The baseball team opens up the 2018 season Thursday in Florida, playing Otterbein at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte. The Mariners went 29-13 last year and return five starters, including NECC player of the year Garet Griffin. They were picked to finish first in the NECC preseason coaches poll.

• Freshman Jesse McKeever earned NECC men’s lacrosse player of the week honors after chipping in three goals and two assists in a loss to Anna Maria. He leads the Mariners in points with five and ground balls with six.
