Judith Layden
Niantic — Judith (Brailey) Layden, 79, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, surrounded by family. She was born April 6, 1938, in New London, to the late Silas and Erma Brailey.
Judy was a lifelong resident of East Lyme: a proud member of the Niantic Center School “Class of ’52,” a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, an original member of the Niantic Community Church, and an active participant in Women’s Fellowship Board and served on many of the Church’s committees.
Judy attended Bryant College and then worked for the town of East Lyme for many years, first at the Board of Education and then the Finance Department. She retired from the Town Hall but continued to work as a bookkeeper at the Niantic Community Church and later, at the East Lyme Public Library. She was known for her quick mind, amazing memory and enjoyed working right until her passing.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 57 years Justin Layden, and their daughter Marcia (Layden) Whitney. Judy is survived by her son-in-law James Ethan Whitney of Waterbury, and three stepdaughters who she loved as her own, Valerie (Larry) Langer, Sharron (Doug) Stebbens, and Judy (Tim) Orefice, and cherished grandchildren David Whitney, Dawne (Charlie) Farrell, Deanna (Scot) Sioch, Greg (Roseanne) Prevost, and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Judy was also a devoted aunt and sister, and will be missed by her extended family who she continually inspired with her kindness and generosity: her late brother Roger Brailey’s children, Robin Beth and Scott (Robyn) Brailey; her brother John (Joy) Brailey of Beavercreek, Ohio, and their children, Paul (Jeanine) Brailey, Glen Brailey and Susan Brailey; her brother Bruce (Mary) Brailey of East Lyme and their children, Matthew (Patty) and Allison Brailey and Stephen Faulkner; her sister-in-law Pat (Al) Whiting and their children Lee (Robyn) Whiting and Cheryl (Tommy) Swords; her late sister-in-law Janice Martingano’s surviving children Michelle, Brenda, Cynthia and Michael. Her late sister-in-law Pearl Layden Pink, is survived by Heidi, Billy and Delight.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 2, at Niantic Community Church. Reception to follow immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Niantic Community Church Memorial Fund or the East Lyme Public Library. A private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
