JUSTIN THOMAS TO PLAY IN TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP
The PGA Tour's reigning Player of the Year is headed back to Cromwell.
Justin Thomas, the 24-year-old who capped his breakout season on the tour by winning the 2017 FedEx Cup, has committed to play in the 2018 Travelers Championship, according to a release.
“Having the best PGA Tour players in our field is always the goal, and there was nobody better than Justin in 2017,” said Travelers Championship tournament director Nathan Grube. “Justin first played in our event when he was an amateur and we've built a great relationship with him over the years. We're happy that he continues to find time in his schedule to keep coming back to TPC River Highlands.”
Thomas won last week's Honda Classic in a playoff to notch his eighth win on tour, joining Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth as the only players ever to do so before the age of 25. He won his first major, the 2017 PGA Championship, at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C.
In his four previous starts at TPC River Highlands, Thomas' best finish was a tie for third in 2016, when he shot a final-round 62 on the day Jim Furyk set a tour record with a 58.
Thomas joins Rory McIlroy in what figures to be another star-studded edition of the state's signature summer event. The 2017 Travelers Championship was honored as the tour's Tournament of the Year after Spieth topped Daniel Berger in stunning fashion, holing his shot from a greenside bunker on the 18th hole to win in a playoff.
