Harriet Graville

-

Ledyard — Harriet Amelia (Richmond) Graville, formerly from Gales Ferry, entered eternal life in South Africa on Dec. 4, 2017.

She was born in Cape Town, South Africa on Oct. 2, 1932. In 1963 while playing in a women’s softball league in South Africa, she met her future husband, William “Bill” Graville, who was an officer in the U.S. Navy. They were soon married and Harriet became a U.S. citizen in 1965.

Bill and Harriet shared a wonderful life together. During his military career they traveled and lived in many places; their favorites being Japan and Hawaii, before finally settling in Gales Ferry. They loved experiencing new cultures, entertaining guests, playing bridge and golf until Bill passed in 1980. Harriet remained in their home in Gales Ferry and was joined there by her sister Eileen in 1987. They took care of each other and returned to South Africa to be with family in 2015.

Harriet retired from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London in 2008 after 30 years of service. She had no children but always considered the cadets her “children.” She was a beloved member of the C.G. Academy family.

Harriet was an active member of the Pequot Women’s Golf Association where she won the women’s club championship in 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1990 and remained an active player until 2011.

Harriet’s quick wit and humor, South African accent and infectious smile endeared her to all who met her. She was a role model for all ages with a strong work ethic, always impeccably dressed and very active and physically fit throughout her lifetime.

Harriet’s life came full circle by living in South Africa during the last few years of her life. Her loving family finds solace knowing that she is now at peace and reunited with Bill.

Please strive to keep Harriet’s spirit alive by sharing kindness, compassion, grace and love.
