Waterford — Elizabeth “Betty” Getty, 82, of Waterford, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, at Beechwood Manor in New London surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on Dec. 23, 1935, in New London, the daughter of Irene (Phillips) Croome and Ray Phillips. She graduated from New London High School in 1953 and then attended the University of Connecticut where she earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration in 1957. She was a very talented musician playing the piano, saxophone and clarinet and was a member of the band for four years at New London High School.

She married Thomas Getty, of Quaker Hill, on June 15, 1957. Together they created many cherished memories traveling to various locations and recently celebrated 60 beautiful years of marriage.

After raising her family, Betty worked as executive secretary to the principal at Waterford High School and retired after 20 years of dedicated service. She was a faithful and active member of Lakes Pond Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. Betty was very active in her community and was a member of the local chapter of Business and Professional Women for many years. She also served as an ongoing member of the New London High School reunion committee.

She was an avid ten pin bowler in her day and always enjoyed relaxing at any pool, lake or beach in the summer months. Betty was a devoted friend, a fabulous cook and baker, a talented knitter, a passionate collector and will always be remembered for her holiday decorations throughout the year. Betty was a devoted mother who took great pride in her sons and throughout their lives was a source of unwavering support. She enthusiastically gave this same support, passion and unconditional love to her grandsons.

In addition to her loving husband, Thomas, she is survived by her three sons, Donald Getty and his wife, Lynn, Douglas Getty and his wife, Jeanne and Dean Getty and his wife, Kelly, all of Waterford; seven grandsons, Caleb and his wife, Christa, Thomas, Joshua, Nicholas, Daniel, Angelo and Matthew; and her sister, Linda (Phillips) Pinardi of Port Charlotte, Fla.

The family would like to extend their grateful thanks to the nursing staff at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and the entire staff at Beechwood Manor for their compassionate care and comfort of Betty during her last days with us.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Lakes Pond Baptist Church, 1144 Hartford Turnpike, Waterford. Burial will follow in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford.
