Evelyn Sage
York, Maine — Evelyn Sage, 91, a resident at Sentry Hill retirement community for the past four years, died March 2, 2018. She was born in Old Saybrook, on July 15, 1926, the youngest of three children of Richard and Mary (Urban) Endrich.
Evelyn grew up with family and extended family in that community, graduating from Old Saybrook High School in 1944. She met her husband Walter at a USO dance at the Submarine Base in Groton, where he was stationed. She would wait on her front steps for him to arrive on passes, and they would walk miles together to the Essex Square Theater during their courtship. Married in 1947, they built a family together in a home across the street from her parents. The family moved to Franklin Lakes, N.J., in 1965, then back to Ledyard, as a couple, when Walter retired in 1988, then to Sentry Hill in York, Maine, in 2013. Evelyn and Walter spent 67 years together as husband and wife. Evelyn was a pioneer for working women, excelling as a legal secretary at a time when housewives rarely worked, first at a law firm in Old Saybrook, then at another in Oakland, N.J., until her husband’s retirement. Post-retirement, Evelyn worked part time in the tax office in Ledyard, and continued to volunteer as a caregiver for several elderly residents in her community.
Evelyn is survived by her son Walter Sage, and wife Janet, of Warwick, R.I.; daughter Cindy Raymond, and husband Kevin, of York, Maine; grandchildren Meagan Sage, Matthew and Dana Sage, Kristin Raymond and Drew Davis, and Michelle Raymond; and niece
and nephew Linda and David Nelson. She is predeceased by her husband Walter, brother Richard Endrich and sister Mae Nelson.
Evelyn had many interests and avocations, including knitting, gardening, and reading. She loved Danielle Steele romance novels and never turned down a sweet dessert. Evelyn and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe as a couple and with close friends, especially during retirement. She was an avid walker, embraced as the matriarch of her neighborhood during mileslong jaunts in Ledyard. Evelyn was a frugal child of the Depression, yet an astute and wise investor, with always an eye for her family’s secure future. The hallmark of Evelyn’s life was her devotion to family. She would, without fail, attend all of her daughter’s basketball games, loved to hear her son play the piano, and looked forward to yearly weeklong summer vacations, enduring the daily fishing excursions of her husband and children. She and her sister took care of her mother at their homes during her mother’s last years. Evelyn loved her family more than anything and at holidays would invariably say, “It’s so nice to all be together.” We will miss her terribly.
Evelyn’s family would like to thank the staff at Sentry Hill, with support from Beacon Hospice, for their compassionate, respectful, and loving care of Evelyn during the last several years.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, at St. Christopher Church, 4 Barrell Lane, York, Maine. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
