Saranac Lake, N.Y. — Emmanuel R. “Manny” Bailey, who founded, owned and operated the former Arrow Paper and Supply Company in Groton, died Tuesday, March 6, 2018. He was 98.

Mr. Bailey was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Merchant Marines, and a member of the Civilian Conservati­on Corps during the Great Depression.

Mr. Bailey founded Arrow Paper and Supply Company in 1954. The business provided paper supplies and industrial floor machines to restaurant­s, schools, hospitals and other institutio­ns throughout Connecticu­t.

As a businessma­n in Groton, he was a 14-year member and former president (1966-67) of the Kiwanis Club, and a longtime member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Groton Ambulance Associatio­n. Mr. Bailey was an auxiliary member of the Connecticu­t State Police and carried his badge in his wallet until his passing.

He sold his paper company in 1974, and moved to the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York.

Mr. Bailey was born on Dec. 28, 1919, in Clayton, N.Y., the son of Eugene P. and Christine (Belleville) Bailey. He was one of 11 children. He was married to Irene Silva, who was born in New London. She predecease­d him in 1987.

Mr. Bailey is survived by two daughters, Lesley B. Lyon, and husband Richard Lyon, of Saranac Lake, N.Y., and Cecily Bailey, and husband Thomas Bergin, of Round Lake, N.Y.; one brother, Peter E. Bailey of Watertown, N.Y.; and a sister, Patricia A. Doldo, and husband John Doldo, of Watertown, N.Y.; three grandchild­ren, Richard S. Lyon of Lake Clear, N.Y., Douglas M. Lyon of Peru, N.Y., and Heather Wells of Berlin, N.Y.; four great-grandchild­ren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
