Niantic — Myrtle “Mert” Louise LaFountain­e, 75, went to be with the Lord Friday, March 9, 2018, after a lengthy illness.

She was born Aug. 1, 1942, in Hartford, the daughter of K. Gustave and Esther (Johnson) Carlson. She was raised in Granby and was a graduate of Granby Memorial High School. The family later moved to Old Black Point, Niantic.

Mert opened her home to everyone and always had a treat to share. She loved to write and collect recipes, cook/ cater, watch UConn women’s basketball, NASCAR, and supported family and friends that raced at the Waterford Speedbowl. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her, most of all by her daughter Kari Cully, her husband Don and two grandchild­ren Andrew and Lauren, all of Gales Ferry; as well as Pete, Carl (Darlene), Caleb, Joshua, Erik, Anders, sister-in-law Greta and her loving family and many friends.

She was predecease­d by her parents, sister Shirley Aarsand, brother Robert Carlson, and nephews Roy Aarsand and Ken and Tom Carlson.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at Stedfast Baptist Church, 256 North Road, Groton. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Special thanks to Jen and the staff at Apple Rehab in Mystic, and L+M 4th floor medical team. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Stedfast Baptist Church.
