POLICE: TEEN SENT STOLEN CAR AIRBORNE

-

Norwich — A 19-year-old man was charged Monday with driving a stolen vehicle so erratically that it went airborne and crashed into a cliff off state Route 2.

State police charged Antwane Ifill with driving an unregistered vehicle, failure to carry minimum insurance, reckless driving, failure to drive in the proper lane, driving without a license and third-degree larceny. Ifill has two last known addresses: One in Grafton, Mass., and one in Windsor.

In an accident report, police said Ifill was driving east on Route 2 just after 2 p.m. Monday, weaving in and out of traffic at excessive speeds, when he lost control on a curve in the roadway. Police said the 1997 Honda Accord Ifill was driving struck a guardrail, went airborne, hit a cliff side and ended up back in the roadway about 150 feet from the damaged guardrail. The vehicle sustained “severe disabling damage to all sides,” according to the report.

In a Facebook post, Yantic firefighters said it took them 15 minutes to extricate Ifill from the vehicle. Police said he sustained minor injuries in the collision.

Ifill additionally was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to sell after police said they found marijuana packaged for sale inside the Honda.

Ifill posted $25,000 in nonsurety bonds and is due April 5 in Norwich Superior Court.
