Hartenstei­n sets hits mark in Mitchell sweep

New Haven — Mitchell College senior Kyle Hartenstei­n became the program's career hit leader as the Mariners baseball team swept a nonleague doublehead­er from Albertus Magnus on Wednesday, winning the opener 12-4 and the second game 10-2.

Hartenstei­n had three hits in the sweep to give him 193 for his career. He had been tied at 190 with 2011 graduate Jeff Perillo.

In the opener, New London's Jeremy Santos was 3-for-4 including a triple with two RBI and two runs for Mitchell (12-2). Garet Griffin, Eric Marriott, and Hartenstei­n (three RBI) added two hits each for the Mariners. Steven Pagan, Griffin and Marriott each had two hits in the second game.

H.S. coaching changes

• Stonington has announced that girls' soccer coach Dave Walsh is stepping down after 24 seasons. Walsh won 216 games with the Bears.

• Ledyard Athletic Director Jim Buonocore announced that girls' basketball coach Peter Vincent is stepping down after four seasons. The Colonels qualified for the state tournament in each of his seasons. Tim Strong has also been been named the boys' cross country coach. He replaces Bill Billing, who led the Colonels for five season and guided them to a state title in 2015.

College softball

• Taylor Duchesneau and Shlya Phillips-Krick pitched shutouts as Mitchell College sewpt a nonleague doublehead­er from Pine Manor. Duchesneau pitched a three-hitter in a 10-0 win in the opener and Phillips-Krick pitched a two-hitter in a 8-0 win in the second game. Both games ended after five innings on a mercy rule.

Italia Krick was 2-for-3 and scored twice and Maliah Pabellon drove in two runs in the opener. Samantha DelConte and Phillips-Krick had two hits each in the second game for Mitchell (4-6). Pine Manor (0-6) made 15 errors in the two games.

• Coast Guard was swept in a nonleague doublehead­er at Wesleyan, losing the opener 6-1 and the second game 4-3. Casey Cruzpino had three hits and Emily Hogan doubled for Coast Guard (9-3).

Women’s lacrosse

• Kate McCormack had six goals as Mitchell used a dominant second half to win its first game of the season, 14-7 over the Massachuse­tts College of Liberal Arts. Lindsey Fairbank had three goals and an assist and Francesca Pinard added two goals and two assists for Mitchell (1-2), which outscored the Trailblaze­rs 7-0 in the second half.

H.S. basketball

• Six local players were selected to the Connecticu­t High School Coaches Associatio­n allstate teams, three as first-team selections. Waterford's Mikey Buscetto and East Lyme's Dev Ostrowski made the Division III boys' first team and Kate Hall of Stonington made the Class M girls' first team.

Three boys' players were second-team selections — Trevor Hutchins of Ledyard (Division II), Max Lee of St. Bernard (Division IV), and Old Lyme's Aedan Using (Division V).

H.S. hockey

• The CIAC Division III champion Eastern Connecticu­t Eagles were named the Team of the Year by the Connecticu­t High School Coaches Associatio­n. The Eagles (19-3-3) won more games this season than it had the previous four seasons (14-68) en route to the program's first state title. They beat Tri-Town in the championsh­ip game (7-3), and in the Nutmeg Hockey Conference tournament championsh­ip game (4-3). The Eagles' Evan Tower was also named to the Division III second-team.
