The Carbonaro effect
After years of watching the serious personalities of magicians such a Criss Angel and David Blaine, the world was in need to of a more, uh, lighthearted trickster — and one who could convincingly pull off magic illusions with hilarity. That magician is Michael Carbonaro of Tru TV’s candid television magic show “The Carbonaro Effect,” and he’ll be gracing the stage at Foxwoods Saturday.
For those unfamiliar with his show, I highly recommend you check out some clips on YouTube — it is seriously laugh-out-loud funny. In the show, which is a cross between David Blaine’s street magic, “Candid Camera” and “Impractical Jokers,” Carbonaro dresses up in various disguises and pretends to be a waiter, a store clerk, or a salesman at Best Buy, among other professions, while convincing people that the insane things they are seeing (his magic tricks) are, in fact, real. How he is able to hold a straight face through these jokes is really a wonder.
But Carbonaro has been pursuing other variations of magic entertainment of late, particularly in the form of live performances in front of audiences of thousands.
How that plays out, compared to his shows that bank on unsuspecting passersby, is the question at hand here. But considering the hilarity of his television show (made even funnier by Carbonaro’s spot-on characterizations), we’re going to guess that his Foxwoods performance will be worth your dollar.
