Buscetto, Nicholson selected to play in prestigiou­s JCC Classic

NFA girls’ lacrosse team routs RHAM as Guerrier erupts for five goals

Waterford — Waterford's Mikey Buscetto and New London's Rosi Nicholson have been selected to play in the 57th Annual Jewish Community Center Schoolboy/Schoolgirl Classic on Sunday at Cardinal Shehan Center in Bridgeport.

Buscetto, who led the Lancers to the Div. III state championsh­ip last month, will play on the Connecticu­t team with many of the state's other top seniors. Connecticu­t will play New Jersey at 3 p.m.

Other Connecticu­t team members include: Qualon Wilkes, Bassick; Tyler Bourne, Noreaga Davis, Notre Dame-Fairfield; Tyler Thomas, Amity; Byron Breland III, Christian Adams, Hamden Hall; Raheem Solomon, Isiah Gaiter, Sacred Heart; Sean Conway, Fairfield Warde; Contavio Dutreil, Trinity Catholic; John Kelly, Cheshire Academy; and Matt Veretto, East Catholic.

The New Jersey team features players headed to Villanova (Jahvon Quinerly), Ohio State (Luther Muhammad) and Rutgers (Ron Harper Jr.).

Nicholson, who helped the Whalers go undefeated during the regular season, win the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference title and advance to the Class LL state tournament quarterfin­als, will play on the East team against the West team in the girls' game that starts at 1 p.m.

Other East team members are: Anna Barry, RHAM; Mary Baskervill­e, Enfield; Delaney Connors, Conard; Loren D'Agostino, East Windsor; Danielle Delano, Cat Fonsera, Enfield; Izzy Lipinski, Farmington; Melanie Polanco, Maloney; Amber Raisner, Hall; and Janette Wadoloski, Southingto­n. Tickets are $10 for both games. Buscetto, who's headed to Division II Southern New Hampshire this fall, also will play in the Greater Hartford Pro-Am League this summer.

Girls' lacrosse

• G.G. Guerrier scored five goals while Jess Bryan controlled nine of 12 draws as Norwich Free Academy rolled to a 9-1 win over RHAM in a nonleague game.

Kayley Ericson added a goal and four assists for the Wildcats (1-1) while goalie Jillian Brunelli stopped five shots and Ria Kilimos, Kali Whitford and Gabby Hunt also scored goals. It was RHAM's opener.

• Lydia Tinnerello had three goals and Daisy Colvin and Anna Sather each had a goal and an assist as Old Lyme won its season opener 10-3 over Morgan in the Shoreline Conference.

Paige Britton and Sammy Owen also scored goals for the Wildcats and Emily Erne had six saves. Georgia Nye had three goals for the Huskies (1-1) and Cassidy Shepard had nine saves.

Boys' lacrosse

• Alec Speirs had three goals and James Rollins had 16 saves as Old Lyme downed Morgan 6-3 in its season opener in the Shoreline Conference.

Mike Kolesnik scored twice, Jonathan Nichele had a goal and an assist, and Owen Macadam scored for the Wildcats.

• Trevor Boutot's goal at 3:15 of the first overtime lifted Tolland to a 1211 nonleague win over Montville. Joe Andrews scored four goals for the Indians (0-2) while Sam Kury had three goals, two assists and won 22 of 24 faceoffs.

Sean Ventresca added two goals and three assists for Montville while Zack Boyle and Derek Debbis each added a goal.

College baseball

• Mitchell College is second in Division III in the latest New England Intercolle­giate Baseball Associatio­n poll, its highest ranking in program history.

The Mariners, 15-2 overall, received 32 points, sitting behind leader UMass Boston of the Little East Conference with 48 points.

Mitchell returns to action today by hosting Amherst College in a nonleague game at 4 p.m.
