GROTON WOMAN INJURED IN SCUFFLE OVER CHILD CARE

-

Groton — Police on Tuesday charged a man with assaulting a town woman this past weekend after an argument about child care.

Scott Brown, 36, of no certain address was charged with disorderly conduct and third-degree assault.

Police learned of the Sunday night incident because a resident of the Hickory Drive home where it happened managed to dial 911. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, dispatchers on the other end heard a woman saying, “Put down the knife, you don’t need the knife.”

Dispatchers sent several officers and an ambulance to the scene.

On arrival, officers found Brown without a knife, huddled in a kitchen corner next to an open drawer. Police described Brown as aggressive and inconsolable and said they had to use a Taser to subdue him.

Officers took him into custody “for a police emergency examination,” the affidavit states.

Through interviews with two adults who were in the residence, police learned Brown had been staying at the Motel 6 in Groton but was at the Hickory Drive home to visit his child. Around 10 p.m. Sunday, police said, Brown became aggravated over child care and said he wanted full custody. The two adults who live on Hickory Drive have custody of the child, police said.

Both residents of the home said Brown was emotional and threatening to kill himself with a knife he had grabbed from the kitchen. The residents, who told police Brown never pointed the knife at them, said they were concerned for Brown’s safety.

Police said one of the residents, a woman, was injured as she tried to block Brown from grabbing a second knife once he lost his grip on the first. Police said she had bruises on her left hand, arm and knee and asked that Brown be formally barred from the home.

Police obtained a warrant for Brown’s arrest and on Tuesday took him back into custody. Court records show Brown remains in custody on a $5,000 bond and is next due in New London Superior Court on May 9.
