Bears win own CGA Spring Invite

New London — Ben Zarlengo won a pair of weight events to help Coast Guard Academy capture its own Spring Invitation­al men's outdoor track and field title on Saturday.

Zarlengo won the discus (134 feet, 11 inches) and hammer (157-10) to help the Bears finished with 201 points, well of ahead of Division II Franklin Pierce's 126 total. Zarlengo also led a 1-2 CGA finish in both events as teammate Justin Jezuit was second in the discus (130-6) and second in the hammer (144-10).

Michael Frick added a win in the pole vault for Coast Guard (14-5.25), which also won five events on the track. Ben Taminger won the 800-meter race (1 minute, 55.11) while Luke Rehfuss captured the 400 hurdles (57.87), Raeford Penny the 200 (22.45), Jake Pawlina the 400 (50.28), the the 4x100 relay team of Brett Foster, Taminger, Sydney Johnson and Matt Perlich won in 3:24.43.

The Bears also picked up seconds from Dennis Day (pole vault, 13-11.25), Ed Carroll (triple jump, 40-10.25), Michael Bishop (200 (22.58) and Perlich (400, 51.91), while thirds went to Nick Frystack (200, 22.64) and Aidan Becker (400, 51.99).

For Connecticu­t College, which tied for sixth with Babson with 43 points, Jonathan Handy was third in the hammer (140-2) and Christian Carr-Locke was fifth in the 800 (159.99).

Women's track & field

• Conn College won five events to finish third in the CGA Spring Invitation­al with 110.5 points, trailing Westfield State (124.5) and Trinity (122). Koko Mensha won the shot put (40-11) for the Camels while Emily Senatore captured the discus (132-3), Aly Saperstein the javelin (128-10), Leila Alfaro the 400 hurdles (1:10.68) and Kennedy the long jump (17-3.25). Mensha also added a second in the discus (131-7).

Kaitlyn Mooney led host Coast Guard to a fourth-place finish (106 points) by winning the 1,500 in 4:47.92 and placing second in the 800 (2:20.16). Also for the Bears, Caroline Jenkins took second in the 400 hurdles (1:10.78) and third in the 100 hurdles (16.64) while Anna Beck was second in the 400 (1:00.47) and Gabbie Troise was second in the hammer (164-10) and fourth in the discus (109-10) and shot put (36.3.5).

Men's lacrosse

• Sophomore Riley McNulty became the first player in program history to record 100 points, as Coast Guard topped Wheaton, 10-5, the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. McNulty finished with four goals and two assists while junior Benner Geursten had two goals and one assist and freshman Will Iorio added two goals for the Bears (8-2, 3-0). Junior Colin Cashin won 13 of 17 faceoffs and had a season high 10 ground balls.

• Andrew Small's goal in overtime rallied Bates College to an 11-10 win over Connecticu­t College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Bates (7-5, 3-4) scored two goals in the final three minutes of regulation to force the OT. Maxx Trotsky led the Camels (8-3, 4-3) with four goals and one assists while Ben Parens won 18 of 25 faceoffs.

• Dean College rolled to a 17-3 win over Mitchell College in the New England Collegiate Conference. Montville's Kyle Marsh scored all three goals for the Mariners (9-0, 0-1).

Women's lacrosse

• Bates scored five of the last six goals to rally for a 107 victory over Conn College in the NESCAC. Jamie Navoni had three goals, one assist and won nine draws for the Camels (2-8, 0-7) while Kirby Heffrin added a goal and three assists.

• Wheelock rolled to a 203 win over Mitchell in the NECC. Kate McCormack had two goals and an assist for the Mariners (2-3, 1-1) while Lindsey Fairbank scored one goal.

Baseball

• Avery Point and CCRI split a doublehead­er in Groton, the Pointers taking the opener 14-2 in five innings and CCRI winning the second game 5-3. In the opener, Trevor Bolduc scattered four hits over five innings to earn the win while Omar Montalvo hit a grand slam, Alex Petchark drove in three runs and Mike Chiovitti had two hits and two RBI.

• Coast Guard dropped a NEWMAC doublehead­er to Springfiel­d, 12-5 and 2-1. The Bears (6-10, 0-7) have lost six straight. Luke Thompson had a two-run single, a double and three RBI and Will Stephens was 3-for-4 in the opener. In the second game, Jake Behne had a pinch-hit RBI double and P.J. Gravalec pitched well in defeat.

• Mitchell scored two runs in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and beat Dean College, 3-2, in the second game of a NECC doublehead­er. A wild pitch and Garet Griffin's RBI single accounted for the two tie-breaking runs. Peter Abate finished with two hits and Jeremy Santos added an RBI double for the Mariners (16-3, 6-2). In the first game, the Mariners dropped a 4-3 decision. James Rangel had two of the team's four hits and added an RBI.

Women's tennis

• Division II Merrimack edged Conn College 5-4 in a match moved inside to the Luce Field House. Marian Warren, Emily Migliorini and Brinley Bartlett won singles matches for Conn (2-2) while Warren teamed up with sister Angelica Warren to win at No. 1 doubles.

Women's rowing

Coxswain Anna Jeffers guided Conn College's varsity four to a first-place finish in its season opening regatta against Assumption, Clark, Hamilton and Johnson & Wales in Worcester, Mass.

Madelyn Brewer, Beckie Duseau, Julia Vitagliano and Alexa Bassler joined Jeffers to edge Hamilton with a winning time of 8:41.9.

Earlier in the day, coxswain Joyce Welch led the varsity eight to a third-place showing among five teams while the second varsity ground, with Kelly Spy Frumer serving as coxswain, placed third.
