Gavin sparks Old Lyme softball team to victory

Old Lyme — Audrey Gavin pitched a seven-hitter with 11 strikeouts and stole five bases as Old Lyme beat East Hampton 9-1 in a Shoreline Conference sofftball game on Sunday.

Gavin (2-0) didn't walk any and went 2-4 and scored a pair of runs. Maddie Cann doubled twice, scored twice, stole two bases and drove in a pair of runs and Catey Battalino was 2-for-4 with two RBI for Old Lyme (20, 2-0). In other games: • Kaitlyn Davis hit a three-run triple in a four-run second inning as Griswold beat Norwich Free Academy 6-2. Griswold (4-0) is ranked ninth in the GameTimeCT/New Haven Register state poll and NFA (1-1) is eighth. Shea Gendron, Sara Cote and Julie Vincent had two hits each for NFA and Cote drove in two runs. Bailey Comeau, who came on in relief in the second inning for NFA, allowed one earned run and struck out 11 with one walk.

H.S. baseball

• Nick Helbig and Calvin Jacey drove in three runs each as Fitch beat North Kingstown, R.I., 12-5. Helbig, who doubled and scored three runs, was also the winning pitcher. Giovanni Valentine was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, Weston Jacey drove in two runs, Calvin Jacey was 3-for-3 and Tyler Cady scored twice for Fitch (3-0).

• Wheeler lost to Woodstock Academy, 4-3 in eight innings. Aiden Cameron had three hits and Bowen Baker drove in two runs for Wheeler (0-2). Starting pitcher Chris Haines allowed three runs over six innings for Wheeler.

College baseball

• Bryton Ferris pitched eight strong innings as Mitchell College beat Dean College 10-1 in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Ferris (5-0) allowed one unearned run and seven hits with five strikeouts.

Steven Pagan was 4-for-4 with a double and four RBI and Eric Marriott homered and drove in three runs for Mitchell (17-3, 7-2).

• Coast Guard remained winless in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference, losing to Springfiel­d 11-0. The Bears are 6-11, 0-8.

• Anthony Prado scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning as UConn capped a doublehead­er sweep of No. 22 Central Florida in the American Athletic Conference. The Huskies (17-10, 3-3) won the opener 6-2 and Prado's run gave them a 7-6 win in the second game. Former Wheeler standout Troy Stefanski had two hits, including an RBI single, in the second game and Prado had two hits in each game.

• Avery Point split a doublehead­er with Brookdale Community College, winning the second game 11-3 after losing the opener 7-3. Mike Chiovitti and Waterford's Justin Keating drove in three runs each and Gary Costello was the winning pitcher in the second game. Ryan Bagdasaria­n and Chiovitti had two hits in each game for Avery Point (11-5-1).

College softball

• Emily Hogan's walkoff RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning capped off Coast Guard's NEWMAC doublehead­er sweep of Emerson. Coast Guard (13-5, 6-2) won the opener 6-0 behind Sydney Arendt's seven-hitter and Hogan's hit gave the Bears a 5-4 win. Hogan was 5-for-7 with three doubles and two runs scored, Waterford's Claire Hurley was 4-for-8 with three runs scored and two RBI and Courtney McKenna was 4-for-7 for Coast Guard. The Bears got homers from Emma Hvozdovich and Audrey Bartz in the opener.

• Mitchell College was swept by Elms in an NECC doublehead­er, losing each game 11-3 in five innings. Megan Elphick of Waterford tripled and drove in two runs in the first game and Kaitlin Thibodeau-Corey had two hits in the second game for Mitchell (8-10, 4-2).

Men's tennis

• Babson swept doubles and beat Coast Guard 7-2 in a NEWMAC match. John Hu won 4-6, 7-6, 10-4 at No. 2 singles and teammate Arthur Wicke won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 for Coast Guard (4-3, 1-1).

Women's water polo

• Connecticu­t College lost to Brown, 9-6. Freshman Stephania Lopez scored five goals for Conn (6-7) and classmate Sabrina Afshinneko­o turned away eight shots.

Road racing

• Jon Dipippo of Waterford won the Great Strides for Great Neck 5K in Waterford with Clinton's Sybil Shapiro winning the women's title, coming in second overall. Dipippo's time was 18:45 and Shapiro finished in 19:19.

Rounding out the top 10 were Paul Trehern of Waterford (19:24), Justin Madry of Waterford (19:39), Linda Spooner of Sturbridge, Mass. (19:47), Aidan Pepin of Quaker Hill (20:03), Owen Seltzer of Waterford (21:05), William Clark of Thomaston (21:20), Marcy Withington of Old Lyme (21:46) and Laura Maher of Canterbury (23:25).

• Matthew Speight of Central Village won the Run to Recovery 2.3-mile race in Waterford on Saturda, finishing in 14:00.

Kate Carleson of Plainfield was the top female finisher, coming in 13th at 16:53.

Also finishing in the top 10 were Matthew Laliberte of Colchester (14:02), Matt Kung of Salem (14:07), James Gregg Jr. of Waterford (15:34), Carson Belisle of Plainfield (15:35), Tyler Laperle of Gales Ferry (15:37), Colin Delaney of East Lyme (15:59), Anders Dahl of Stonington (16:00), Kevin Price of Mystic (16:00) and Benjamin Syphrett of Gales Ferry (16:05).
