CGA softball sweeps

New Haven — Emma Hvozdovich combined to go 4-for-5 with a homer, four RBI and two runs scored Tuesday in a doublehead­er sweep for the Coast Guard Academy softball team. The Bears topped Albertus Magnus 9-2 in game one and 10-0 in game two.

Carly Hattman went 5-for-7 on the day with three runs scored and Courtney McKenna finished with three RBI and two runs scored for the Bears (15-5). Emily Hogan followed up her walk-off double with another strong outing, going 3-for-7 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI.

In the first game, Coast Guard jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first after McKenna doubled to right-center to score Waterford's Claire Hurley for the first run of the game. Casey Cruzpino then singled, scoring McKenna to give the Bears the 2-0 advantage.

Hogan scored on a passed ball in the top of the fourth and Hurley reached on an error, bringing home Malia Hindle, as Coast Guard took a 4-0 lead. The Bears added three in the sixth and two in the seventh. Julia Ferris, a sophomore, allowed seven hits, striking out two, to up her record to 8-3.

Coast Guard kept its roll going in the second game beginning with a two-run homer by Hvozdovich in the third, her fifth home run of the season, for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Sydney Arendt (7-2) wrapped up her first career shutout, scattering five hits and striking out three.

College baseball

• Waterford's Alex Petchark had three hits and drove in four runs as Avery Point beat Massasoit 16-6. Ryan Bagdasaria­n had five hits, Trevor Brandi had three hits and Omar Montalvo drove in two runs for the Pointers (12-5-1).

• Alec Kushner and Ethan Rolland each had four hits, while Garrett Greenwood and Thomas Allison homered, leading MIT to a 16-4 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Jeremy Lhotka had three hits and two RBI for Coast Guard (613, 0-9).

College men's track

• Jake Pawlina (javelin), Ben Zarlengo (hammer) and Justin Jezuit (discus) dominated the throwing events as Coast Guard topped rival Merchant Marine 102. Combined with the victory for the women's track team over Merchant Marine, the Bears wrapped up Coast Guard's fourth straight Superinten­dents' Trophy, 9.5-3.5.

Other wins for Coast Guard came from Raeford Penny in the 100 (11.27), Miguel Moroles in the 400 (51.44), Luke Rehfuss in the 400 hurdles (58.33), Josiah Davis in the 800 (2:01.85), Adam VanDeren in the 1,500 (4:18.00) and Colton Atkinson in the 5K (15:23.50). The Bears took the 4x100 (Penny, Michael Bishop, Moroles and Pawlina), while the distance crew of Atkinson, Logan Bonner, Ryan Brumm and Ryan Condon won the 4x400.

College women's track

• Coast Guard's Anna Beck won two individual events and was a member of a winning relay while Gabbie Troise and Leilani Salang won two events each in the Bears' 107-43 win over Merchant Marine. Troise took first in the javelin (93-01) and the hammer (160-06) while Salang won the discus (127-07) and the shot (36-07). Beck won the 100 (13.24) and 200 (27.48) and then teamed up with Taylor Rowles, Madeline Colwell and Mary Sims to win the 4x100 in 53.74.

Other winners for Coast Guard were Kaitlyn Mooney in the 1500 (4:42.97), Nina Ragle in the 400 hurdles (1:16.79), Hollis Roush in the 110 Hurdles (17.22), Olivia Suski in the 800 (2:26.01) and Rachel Burchill in the 5K (19:59.29). Mooney, Ragle, Maeve Roach and Emma Sims teamed up to win the 4x400 in 4:23.39.

H.S. golf

• Ryan Sadosky earned medalist honors with a one-over-par 36, lifting Waterford to a 7-0 victory over New London in the season opener for both teams. Bruce Taggart, Joe Lathrop, Nick Hynes and Tanner Correia also won matches for Waterford, which took the team medal points 180-266.

• Junior Peter Macadam shot a low-round, and career best, 36 to pace Old Lyme to its 170-228 win over Hale-Ray in the season-opener for both Shoreline Conference teams. Pat Looney shot a 43, Corey Drummond a 45, and Thomas Creagan a 46, all personal bests, for Old Lyme.

Men's lacrosse

• No. 7 Amherst beat Connecticu­t College 24-11 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Jordan Foster had four goals and an assist and PJ Kelleher had a goal and five assists for Conn (8-4, 4-4).

Women's lacrosse

• No. 4 Amherst beat Connecticu­t College 16-3 in the NESCAC. Jamie Navoni had two goals, won three draws and picked up two ground balls for Conn (3-9, 0-8).

Women's tennis

• Connecticu­t College lost to No. 8 Amherst 8-1 in a NESCAC match. Brinley Bartlett won at No. 6 singles for Conn (2-3, 0-2).
