Waterford softball edges Montville; Bears’ Lennon is nearly perfect

Waterford — Rachel Miller drove in the game-winning run with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning as Waterford High School edged Montville 6-5 in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division II softball game on Friday.

Miller's hit scored Chloe McCue to give the Lancers (32, 3-0) the win.

Madison Nott had three hits for Waterford, while Miller and Ciana Chiappone each had a single and double and Cassidy Susi singled twice.

Montville (2-2, 1-1), which rallied from a 5-3 deficit to force extra innings, was led by Abby Diamantini and Alexis Michon, who each had two hits, one run and one RBI, while Amanda Perkins had two hits and scored twice and Kate Price had a pair of hits. In other games: • Megan Glover's two-out single in the fifth inning ended Trinity Lennon's bid for a perfect game, but Stonington still rolled to a 15-0 victory over Bacon Academy in an ECC Division II game halted after five innings due to the mercy rule. It was the only blemish for Lennon, who struck out nine and also had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two triples, three RBI and two runs scored. Erin Craig added three hits while scoring twice and drive in two for the Bears (41, 2-0) while Miranda Arruda was 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs.

• Hannah Smith pitched a five-inning no-hitter as Norwich Tech beat Grasso Tech in a Connecticu­t Technical Conference game. Kalli Campbell was 3-for-3 a double and four RBI for Norwich Tech.

• Lyman Memorial outlasted St. Bernard 8-4 in an ECC Division III game. Briana Beverly went 3-for-4 with a double and home run for the Saints (2-2, 1-1) while Sarah Brown had two hits and Taina Quinones added a double.

• Tourtellot­te scored five runs in the top of the first inning and went on to beat Wheeler 9-3 in an ECC Division III game. Nikki Collins doubled and scored twice for Wheeler (1-3, 0-0).

• Audrey Gavin and Kassidy Standish each had hits in Old Lyme's 12-0 loss to North Branford in six innings. Gavin added two stolen bases for Old Lyme.

H.S. baseball

• Griffin Powers scattered four hits for a complete-game victory as Old Lyme defeated East Hampton 7-1 in the Shoreline Conference. Jace Funaro led the offense with a second-inning grand slam while Liam Holloway doubled and scored twice.

• Fitch scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning and beat Southingto­n 13-12 in a nonleague game. Tyler Cady and Tyler Nelli had three hits each, Nick Helbig drove in four runs and Joe Vignato and Manish Rane-Castrod drove in two runs each for the unbeaten Falcons (5-0).

• Chris Malcom was 4-for-4 with a home run, double, five RBI and scored four runs as East Lyme beat RHAM 14-4 in a nonleague game. Trystan Levesque was the winning pitcher and went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Matt Malcom was 3-for-4 with three stolen bases for the Vikings (31).

H.S. boys' lacrosse

• Alex Ryan scored six goals as Norwich Tech/Windham Tech defeated E.O. Smith 12-8. Evan Socha, Desmond Dempsey and Cole Paquin added two goals apiece for the Warriors (2-2).

• James Knowlton had five goals and one assist as Williams School pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 12-8 win over Rocky Hill (R.I.) Harry Anselmi added two goals and one assist, Alex Shrivano and Max Sarwar each scored twice and goalie Nash Mendlinger made six saves in the second half for the Blues (2-0).

H.S. girls' lacrosse

• Sophie Salger had four goals and an assist as Williams beat Rocky Hill (R.I.) 105. Ellie Fader, Audrey Matson and Rachel Luxton scored two goals each for Williams (2-0).

• Katie Kelly scored seven goals as NFA beat Southingto­n 15-12 in a nonleague game. Kayley Ericson had four goals, two assists and six draw controls, Catie Shannon scored twice and Jess Bryan had 10 draw controls for NFA (4-2).

• Jacklyn Lavoie had five goals and an assist as Waterford held off Ledyard 8-7 on Thursday. Kaylee Swanson, Olivia Gianakos and Meghan Foley also scored goals for the Lancers (2-1), who led 5-1 at the half. Megan Larmann had two goals and one assist for the Colonels (1-2) while Sabrina Mitchell scord twice, Cassidy Carroll had one goal and one assist, and Avery Samokar and Renee Dupuis each had a goal.

H.S. boys' golf

• NFA opened its season with a 7-0 win over New London in an ECC Division I match. NFA's Warren Strong and Seamus Sullivan shared medalist honors at 42 and Andrew Gromko, Zach Brodeur and Josh Blinderman also won their matches for the Wildcats.

• Stonington opened its season with a 6-1 win over Waterford in an ECC Division II match on Thursday. Stonington's Jack Glenn was the medalist with a 5-over-par 40 and teammates Jacob Geary, Aiden Adams and Caleb Silvia. Ryan Sadowski won at No. 1 for Waterford (2-1, 0-1) with a 42.

College baseball

• Old Lyme's Jordan Warecke pitched a one-hitter as Avery Point beat Holyoke Community College 12-1 in a five-inning game. Warecke struck out seven with no walks, allowing an unearned run. Mike Chiovitti had two hits and drove in three runs, Cote Libby had two hits and two RBI, Ryan Bagdasaria­n drove in two runs and Anthony Socci had two hits for the Pointers (14-5-1).

• Coast Guard lost to WPI 119 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Luke Thompson and Alex Murdoch each went 3-for-4, Jon Pressley had two hits and drove in four runs and Jeremy Lhotka and Reed Jenkins had two hits each for the Bears (615, 0-10).

College football

• UConn will play its annual Spring Game on Saturday at noon at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. Parking and admission is free, with the parking lots opening at 9 a.m. for tailgating and the stadium gates opening at 10:30. There were also be a Fan Fest at the west end of Rentschler Field which will include inflatable­s, face painting and yard games. Fans are also welcome on the field following the game for autographs with the players and coaches.
