Host Conn women third in Silfen Invite track meet

New London — Host Connecticu­t College dominated the throwing events en route to a third-place team finish at the Silfen Invitation­al women's outdoor track and field meet on Saturday.

The Camels had 82 points, trailing only Division II Stonehill (189) and Tufts (89.5). Coast Guard Academy finished fourth with 64 points.

Conn picked up wins from Emily Senatore in the discus (128 feet, 3 inches), Aly Saperstein in the javelin (131-10) and Koko Mensah in the shot put (44-4.25). Senatore added a seventh in the javelin (106-7) while Mensah was seventh in the discus (116-5).

The Camels also placed in all three relay events with the 4x800-meter team of Elizabeth Hensley, Tarvis Hintlian, Eva Brydson and Caitlin Teare placing second (10:06.27), the 4x100 team of Leila Alfaro, Alica Palmer, Sarah Clark and Ivana Lamptey placing fifth (49.60) and the 4x400 team of Clark, Riley Peragine, Cassidy Vincent and Palmer placing fifth (4:11.12).

Also for Conn, Alfaro was third in the 400 hurdles (1:07.21) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (16.59) while Peragine was fifth in the 400 hurdles (1:09.90) and Hintlian was eighth in the 3,000 steeplecha­se (11:48.06).

Coast Guard had one individual champion with Anna Beck capturing the 400 in 58.54, while Kaitlyn Mooney was second in the 5,000 (16:53.70), Leilani Salang was second in the discus (127-5), Kristina Bynum was third in the long jump (16-5.75), Gabbie Troise was third in the hammer (159-11), Caroline Jenkins was seventh in the 400 hurdles (1:10.31) and the 4x800 relay team of Mia Huncharek, Nina Ragle, Maeve Roach and Adora Lawrence was fourth (10:21.13).

Men's outdoor track

• Coast Guard had a pair of individual winners to place third at Conn College's Silfen Invite. Raeford Penny won the 400 (49.10) and Michael Frick captured the pole vault (15-5) for the Bears, who finished with 88 points, trailing only Tufts (129) and Division II Stonehill (110.50).

Penny also finished second in the 200 (22.12) while Luke Rehfuss was second in the 400 hurdles (55.98), Vernon Espinoza was second in the 400 (49.40) and Jacob Pawlina was fifth in the 400 (49.59).

Also for CGA, Ben Zarlengo was second in the discus (142-10) and fourth in the hammer (160-11) while Justin Jezuit was fourth in the discus (136-4) and Dante Roberts was eighth (126-01).

For Conn, which was ninth with 32 points, Connor Trapp was third in the 1,500 (3:57.35), Scott Mason was sixth in the 1,500 (3:59.04), Danny Aschale was seventh in the 5,000 (14:58.34), Mike D'Onofrio was seventh in the javelin (161-3) and the 4x100 relay team of Christian Whitaker, Arlo Siegel, Blake O'Neal and Ian McAleer was seventh (44.47).

Baseball

• Coast Guard snapped an 11-game losing streak en route to a 7-2 and 4-0 doublehead­er sweep of WPI in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. The Bears (8-15, 2-10) scored six runs in the eighth inning to break things open in the first game while pitcher Brett Sullivan earned his first career shutout in the second game. Luke Thompson's RBI single broke a 2-2 tie in the opener before Alex Murdoch singled home another run and Jon Pressley followed with a two-run single. Sullivan (3-4) walked two and struck out four to complete the sweep for CGA, while Ryan Tropeano and Josh Herlands each had two hits.

• Mitchell College pitching limited Becker to just four hits over two games during a 3-2, 12-0 doublehead­er sweep in the New England Collegiate Conference. Eddie Santiago pitched 6.1 innings in the opener and struck out seven for the Mariners (19-4, 9-2) before Jakari Pellegrini (4-0) pitched a complete-game one-hitter in the second game with seven strikeouts. Garet Griffin and James Rangel each hit home runs while Kyle Hartenstei­n recorded a hit in each game to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.

• Richard Moesker pitched a no-hitter in the second game and Monroe College held Avery Point to just one total hit in a doublehead­er sweep in Groton. Monroe won the opener 6-0 and the second game 4-0. Moesker had seven strikeouts in the second game while Francisco Justos struck out 11 over six innings in the opener, allowing a single by Brayden Cooney. Andy Grant pitched well in the second game for the Pointers, allowing no earned runs over seven innings with no walks and nine strikeouts.

Softball

• Emily Hogan's three-run double highlighte­d a four-run fifth in the opener while Emma Hvozdovich hit a pair of homers, including a grand slam and drove in six in the nightcap as Coast Guard swept Wellesley 4-1 and 13-5 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference doublehead­er. Waterford's Claire Hurley added three hits in the opener for the Bears (18-8, 9-5) to back the complete-game effort of Julia Ferris (9-6). Hvozdovich went 4-for-4 in the second game adding a double and six RBI as Coast Guard erupted for 21 hits. Hogan was 4-for-5 while Kayla Sowers and Carly Hattman added three hits apiece.

Men's lacrosse

• Anthony Wyler and Riley McNulty combined for 11 points as Coast Guard earned its first win against Merchant Marine with a 149 victory at Army in West Point, N.Y. Wyler finished with four goals and one assist for the Bears (10-2) to become the second player in program history to score 100 career goals while McNulty scored six goals, three in each half. Jack Pope added three assists while Will Iorio added two goals and Benner Geurtsen two assists. Merchant Marine is 9-2.

• P.J. Kelleher had three goals and three assists to lead Conn College to an 8-5 win over Hamilton in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Camels (9-4, 5-4) held Hamilton scoreless over the final 24 minutes. Jordan Foster also scored three goals for Conn.

Women's lacrosse

• Lexi Lenaghan scored four goals as Babson outlasted Coast Guard 19-14 in the NEWMAC. Leading 129 at halftime, Babson (7-6, 4-1) took charge by scoring the first three goals of the second half to open a 15-9 lead. Brenna Farrington led the Bears (9-4, 2-2) with four goals while Carter Sanderson added three and Marietta Davis two.

• Hamilton cruised to a 13-8 victory over Conn College in the NESCAC. Jamie Navoni had four goals and one assist to lead the Camels (3-10, 0-9).

• Elms remained unbeaten in the NECC with an 18-8 win over Mitchell. Kate McCormack scored four goals to lead the Mariners (2-6, 1-2) while Rachel Barda scored twice and Lindsey Fairbank and Hannah Corrigan each added one goal and one assist.
