Cooney helps Avery Point baseball team earn a split

Groton — Avery Point's Brayden Cooney homered twice and drove in six runs in the second game of a doublehead­er as the Pointers earned a split by beating Monroe College 14-4 in a baseball game on Sunday.

The game ended after five innings on a mercy rule and Monroe won the opener 2-0 as Antonio Frias pitched a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts. Mike Chiovitti also homered, scored three runs and drove in two and Ryan Bagdasaria­n was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI in the second game for Avery Point (15-8-1). In other games:

• UConn fell to No. 20 Wichita State 15-7 in the finale of an American Athletic Conference series. UConn (19-11-1, 5-4) won the three-game series, sweeping a doublehead­er on Friday night.

Anthony Prato was 2-for-4 with two RBI, John Toppa was 2-for-4 with a triple and Chris Winkel and Michael Woodworth had two hits each for UConn.

College softball

• Mitchell split a Saturday night NECC doublehead­er at Lesley, bouncing back from an 8-0 loss in the opener to win the second game 17-12. It was the first conference loss for Lesley (1210, 5-1). Shyla Phillips-Krick had two hits in the opener for Mitchell (9-13, 5-3) while Danielle Autieri had a three-run double and Samantha DelConte drove in three runs.

Road racing

• Jeff Walker of Westerly won the Clamdigger 5K with a time of 19:21 while Kalin Clark of East Providence, R.I., was the top women's finisher, coming in 8th in 22:36. Other local finishers in the top 10 were Ernst Cummings of Westerly (2nd, 20:08), Cameron Weber of Ledyard (7th, 22:34) and Dale Sowle of Westerly (10th, 23:03).

• Salem's Sam Whittaker won the Salem 5K Road Race on Friday, finishing in a time of 16:51. Sybil Shapiro of Clinton was the top women's finisher, coming in 5th at 19:21. Also finishing in the top 10 were David Einsidel of East Hampton (18:24), Fisher Macklin of Salem (18:44), Noah Krishnaswa­mi of East Lyme (19:19), Ned Kennedy of Vernon (19:41), Adam King of Glastonbur­y (19:51), Kevin Glenn of Bolton (20:07), Linda Spooner of Sturbridge, Mass. (20:12) and Matthew Hross of Salem (20:13).
