Tamarac, Fla. — Herbert G. Dean, 86, of Tamarac, died Tuesday, April 24, 2018, in Tamarac. He was born in New London, June 29, 1931, the son of Louis and Beatrice (Shragowitz) Dean. He was the eldest of three children, Herb, Al and Burton. He was a graduate of the former Bulkeley School in New London, Class of 1950.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy. He held the rank of lieutenant junior grade from 1954 to 1956. He was a graduate of the University of Connecticu­t in 1954 and went on to receive two master’s degrees from the University of Southern California, one in city and regional planning and one in environmen­tal management. He had been employed as a city planner and environmen­tal planner with the Air Force and Pentagon. He was featured as an honoree on the Wall of Honor at the Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Mr. Dean retired Oct. 1, 1993, after 28 years of federal service. He received the “Outstandin­g Civilian Service Award” upon his retirement for his outstandin­g contributi­ons to environmen­tal protection, community planning and noise technology. He was the first community planner recruited to help create an Air Force-wide community/environmen­tal planning capability. In 1993, the HQ USAF Environmen­tal Office became the first federal agency to receive the President’s Quality Award for Environmen­tal Excellence. Additional­ly, he is listed on the Honor Wall in the city of Tamarac honoring all those who served.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn L. Dean of Tamarac; daughter Rachelle E. Cole (Steven) of Los Angeles, Calif.; brother Al Dean of Walnut Creek, Calif.; stepdaught­ers Lisa Nino (Herman) of Weston, Fla., and Linda Freitag (Monte) of Forrest Hills, N.Y.; stepson Michael Freitag of Cos Cob; and grandchild­ren Adam Cole, Matthew Meyer, Sophia Nino, David Nino, Daniel Nino, Julia Ilian and Charlotte Freitag.

He was predecease­d by a daughter, Deborah Lynn Meyer; and a brother, Burton Dean.

The funeral service will be conducted at noon Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. Interment will follow in Beth El Cemetery.
