CGA men earn No. 1 seed for NEWMAC lacrosse tourney

Babson Park, Mass. — Coast Guard Academy earned a share of its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's lacrosse regular-season title in program history with an 8-6 victory over Babson College on Saturday.

Coast Guard, Babson and Springfiel­d all finished 6-1 in the NEWMAC, but the Bears won the tiebreaker and will be the top seed in the NEWMAC tournament. They will host No. 4 MIT on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and could host next Saturday's 1 p.m. final with a win.

Benner Geurtsen became the third player in program history to score 100 points points, finishing with two goals and two assists for the Bears (13-3 overall), while Riley McNulty added a goal and two assists, and Matt Huemme, Anthony Wyler and Will Iorio each had one goal and one assist.

Babson (9-6) led 2-1 after the first quarter, but the Bears outscored the Beavers 4-0 in the second to take a 5-2 advantage. They would never relinquish the lead as goalie Trey Johnson made 10 saves.

• Fourth-seeded Williams College ended Connecticu­t College's season with a 10-4 victory over the No. 5 Camels in the quarterfin­als of the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament. P.J. Kelleher scored two goals for Conn, which finishes 10-6, while All-American Ben Parens won 13 of 16 faceoffs in his final game while scooping up nine ground balls.

Women's lacrosse

• Wheaton scored the final five goals to rally past Coast Guard 12-11 in the NEWMAC. Wheaton (8-9, 5-3) earned the No. 4 seed for the upcoming NEWMAC tournament and will host the fifth-seeded Bears (11-6, 4-4) in the quarterfin­als on Wednesday. It will be CGA's first tourney appearance. Marietta Davis and Haley McCue scored three goals apiece for the Bears while Haley Howard had two goals and two assists and Fitch's Daria McKenna had a goal and two assists.

• Mitchell College ended its regular season with a 20-8 loss to Southern Vermont in the New England Collegiate Conference. The Mariners (4-8, 3-4) will play in the NECC tournament next week against an opponent to be determined. Francesca Pinard scored three goals for Mitchell while Rachel Barda and Lindsey Fairbank added two goals apice.

Baseball

• Mitchell clinched at least a share of the NECC regular-season title and earned the No. 1 overall seed for the NECC tournament by splitting a doublehead­er with Elms College. The Mariners (25-8, 13-3) won the opener 4-1 in 10 innings on Peter Abate's three-run walkoff homer before Elms rallied to win the second game 5-4 in 10 innings, scoring four runs in the seventh to tie the game. Mitchell can win the title outright with a win at Elms on Sunday.

• Senior Alex Murdoch had a career-high five hits in his final collegiate game to finish with 100 career hits and junior Will Stephens also collected the 100th hit of his career as Coast Guard ended its season with a 20-0 win over Emerson in Worcester, Mass. The game was a completion of a suspended game that CGA led 10-0. Murdoch was 5-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored for the Bears (11-18, 4-3) while Jeremy Lhotka was 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored and freshman Dylan Roberts was 2-for-2 in the win.

• Waterford's Alex Petchark had a big afternoon, going 4-for-8 and driving in eight runs to lead UConn Avery Point to a 5-3 and 15-4 doublehead­er sweep of the Western Connecticu­t State junior varsity. Petchark hit a grand slam in the opener and then went 4-for-5 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored in the second game. Ryan Bagdarsian added three hits and four runs in the second game while Justin Keating was 2-for4 with three RBI and Mike Chiovitti was 2-for-4 with three runs. Trevor Bolduc won the distance in the opener for the Pointers, allowing just three hits with nine strikeouts.

• Tulane beat No. 20 UConn 7-1 in an American Athletic Conference game at Dunkin' Donuts Park in Hartford. The Huskies (24-13-1, 8-6) scored their only run in the sixth when Wheeler's Troy Stefanski doubled to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and scored on Zac Susi's RBI single.

Women's tennis

• Angelica Warren went 2-0 as Conn College defeated Hamilton 7-2 in the NESCAC. The Camels (4-8, 2-5) won all three doubles matches behind the teams of Warren and her sister Mariah, Meredith Kenny-Britney Bartlett and Aleksandra Drljaca-Stephanie Simon. Rachel Weiss and Hayley Zukerberg added straight-set singles wins for Conn.

Men's tennis

• Ben Sachs and Will Cannon won at No. 1 doubles while Henry DeCoster was a three-set winner at No. 3 singles during Conn College's 7-2 NESCAC loss to Hamilton. The Camels are 2-10, 0-8.
