Preston — Irene A. Zuckerbraun died peacefully on Monday, April 30, 2018, at her home. She was 87 years old.

Irene was born in Berlin, Germany, on July 22, 1930, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1939. She graduated from Cornell University School of Nursing. As a nurse, she taught obstetric nursing at Backus Hospital and worked for many years in the nursing field, including Day Kimball Hospital. She was a lifelong member of Hadassah, a member of the Preston Democratic Town Committee, and was a justice of the peace. She was an avid book collector and particularly loved “Alice in Wonderland.” She was a proud member of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America and looked forward to its annual meetings around the country. Classical music was her lifelong passion, practicing her piano until the end of her life and looking forward to attending concerts at Carnegie Hall and Tangelwood. Her greatest joy was time spent with her family.

Irene is survived by her sons, Joel Zuckerbraun and his fiancée Cindy Forget of Waterford, David Zuckerbraun and wife Gail of Niantic, and Kurt Zuckerbraun and wife Mariflor of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; brother Gerald Liebenau; sister-in-law Florence Polens; several nieces and nephews; and her special canine companion and friend “Tom,” her beloved cockapoo.
