SUN WAIVE TWO TO MAKE ROOM FOR ROMERO, BRIONNA JONES

- — Ned Griffen

The Connecticut Sun waived Khadijiah Cave and Mikayla Cowling on Thursday to make room for Brionna Jones and Leticia Romero, who are expected to arrive on Friday.

WNBA teams cannot have more than 15 players rostered during camp.

Jones, a 6-foot-3 post, had been playing in Russia with her season ending on April 28. The Maryland graduate was Connecticut's first-round pick (eighth overall) last year.

Romero, a 5-8 guard, was drafted out of Florida State in the second round last year (16th overall) even though she wouldn't be able to play last season due to her Spanish national team commitments. She won a silver medal with Spain at the 2016 Summer OIympics.

Connecticut has a crowded frontcourt with Jonquel Jones, Chiney Ogwumike, Alyssa Thomas and Morgan Tuck, which didn't help Cowling and Cave's chances to make the final 12-woman roster.

Cowling, a 6-2 forward who played at California, was drafted in the third and final round (33rd overall) last month. Cave is a 6-3 forward who graduated from Baylor in 2017. She signed a training camp contract with the Sun on April 23.

Jonquel Jones, an All-WNBA second-team pick last season, and guard Alex Bentley are the only players yet to report to camp. Jones is attending to a personal matter at home in the Bahamas. Bentley, who played with Brionna Jones in Russia, is taking extra time to rest.

Connecticut plays the first of three exhibition games on Monday at home against the Los Angeles Sparks. It opens the regular season at home on May 20 against the Las Vegas Aces.
