Two former prominent local athletes earned head coaching positions Friday as Mike Morgan was named the Ledyard High School girls' basketball coach and Jasmine Zubek was hired as the Fitch girls' soccer coach.

Morgan played high school basketball at New London and was a member of the Whalers state championship teams in 2004 and 2005.

He is a 2010 graduate of Bryant University, where he was a member of the football and track teams and was New London's assistant girls' basketball coach during the 2013-14 state championship season. He has served as the director of girls' basketball for the Connecticut Playmakers.

“Mike is an accomplished coach in multiple sports, as well as a proven winner,” Ledyard athletic director Jim Buonocore said in a press release. “He is organized, detailed and extremely competitive. Mike did a tremendous job presenting his overall program plan to our interview team. His on-court interview with our committee clearly established himself as a knowledgeable leader that can elevate our girls' basketball program in all facets.”

Zubek, the former Jasmine Tinker, is a 2002 Old Lyme graduate who earned All-Shoreline Conference and all-state honors as a senior and went on to play for Saint Joseph in West Hartford, earning all-league honors there, as well.

Zubek has been an assistant coach at Old Lyme, Fitch and Mitchell College. She is a school counselor at Fitch.

“We are very excited to have hired Jasmine as our head coach leading our girls' program,” Fitch athletic director Marc Romano said in a release. “She comes to us with an extensive playing and coaching background and will serve as a great role model for our student-athletes.”
