Mitchell baseball opens NECC tournament with 7-3 win over Becker

New London — New London's Eddie Santiago pitched a seven-hitter as Mitchell College won its opener in the New England Collegiate Conference baseball tournament, beating No. 4 Becker 7-3 Friday.

Santiago struck out 11 with one walk. The No. 1 Mariners (28-8) play No. 2 Lesley in the double-eliminatio­n tournament at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Garet Griffin was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Jeremy Santos of New London had two hits and scored twice and Kyle Hartenstei­n drove in a pair of runs for Mitchell.

College softball

• Coast Guard's season came to an end as the No. 5 Bears lost to No. 2 WPI 8-3 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament. Coast Guard opened the day with a 6-1 win over No. 6 Emerson. WPI scored three runs in each of the first two innings. The Bears (22-13) posted their first 20-win season since 2013.

Emma Hvozdovich finishes her career fifth all-time at the academy with 17 homers, sixth with 106 runs scored and 105 RBI and ninth with 144 hits. Against WPI, Courtney McKenna doubled and scored in the fourth inning and Audrey Bartz had a run-scoring single in the fifth. Bartz had two hits and three RBI against Emerson and Carly Hattman and Hvozdovich each had two hits and scored twice.

H.S. baseball

• Tyler Nelli's two-run homer with two outs in the top of the sixth inning tied the game and Fitch went on to score four runs in the seventh to beat New London 8-4 in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division I game. Nelli was 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, Manish Rane-Castrodad was 3-for-5 and Nick Helbig and Tyler Cady had two hits each for Fitch (9-5, 3-3). Elijah Martinez tripled, homered, scored twice and drove in three runs and Robert Parra was 3-for-3 for New London (5-7, 0-5).

• David Preston pitched a six-hitter as Woodstock Academy beat No. 2 Waterford 4-2 in an ECC Division II game. Nick Porazzi was 3-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases for Waterford (9-3, 4-3), which allowed four unearned runs in the third inning.

• Griffin Powers pitched a four-hitter as Old Lyme beat East Hampton 3-0 in a Shoreline Conference game. Powers struck out seven and walked four. Hunter Thornton had two run-scoring hits, Eli St. Germain singled and doubled and Ron Losacano had two hits for Old Lyme (8-6).

H.S. softball

• Alison Ward hit a first-inning grand slam on a 3-2 pitch and finished 3-for-4 with six RBI as Old Lyme defeated Westbrook 19-3 in the Shoreline Conference. Maddie Cann was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the second and three runs scored and Audrey Gavin was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three stolen bases for Old Lyme (9-3, 8-3).

• Madison Nott had four hits and drove in four runs as Waterford beat Woodstock Academy 8-1 in an ECC Division II game. Nott, who had a threerun triple in the sixth inning, also doubled. Cassidy Susi had three hits and winning pitcher Rachel Miller doubled twice for Waterford (7-6, 6-1).

• Bailey Comeau pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts and two walks in Norwich Free Academy's 1-0 loss to South Windsor. South Windsor scored the game's only run in the third inning on an RBI double by Maria Hanchuk and Hanchuk also shut out the Wildcats to earn the victory. Sara Cote had a triple and a single for NFA (9-4) and junior Hailee Schrader picked up the 100th hit of her career with a double in the seventh inning.

H.S. girls' golf

• Waterford's Caroline Petchark was the medalist with a 43 as the Lancers swept a tri-meet, beating East Lyme 212-231 and NFA (243). Sydney Tabor had a 47 for Waterford.

H.S. boys' lacrosse

• Suneal Lall, Robbie Swenson and Connor Schofner scored three goals each as East Lyme beat Wilbur Cross 16-3. Ben Jakubczak had a goal and an assist and James McCoy, Ben Prouty and Tyler Smallidge had two assists each for the Vikings (7-3).

• NFA lost to Xavier 183. Mathew Kolashuk scored twice for NFA (5-9).

H.S. girls' lacrosse

• Waterford lost to Old Saybrook 17-12. Olivia Gianakos had four goals, Emma Brown scored three times and Grace Briggs had two goals and four assists for Waterford (5-5).

Road racing

• 10th annual Bearathon 5K — Monday, May 28, beginning at 10 a.m. Also includes a twomile walk. Race begins and ends at the Mystic branch of the Ocean Community YMCA.
