Janice Nichols
Norwich — Janice E. (Newbury) Nichols passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2018.
She was born July 24, 1932, the daughter of Milford E. Newbury Sr. and Lillian (Brewster) Newbury.
She attended local schools and graduated from Norwich Free Academy, Class of 1949. Upon graduation, she was employed by the Hartford Trust Co., later known as the Connecticut Bank and Trust Co., for over 40 years, but not consecutively.
She was a communicant of Grace Episcopal Church in Yantic where she taught secondary school and sang in the choir. Janice was married on Aug. 27, 1960, to Warren R. Nichols at the Montville Center Congregational Church by their dear friend, the Rev. William Beriman. Warren passed away on Feb. 9, 2009, at the age of 81.
She was predeceased by her sister, Faith Newbury Gorden; and her brother, Milford E. Newbury Jr.
Survivors include two nephews in New Jersey, Paul (wife Candy) and Mark (wife Robyn); and nephew and niece in Norwich, Daniel Newbury and Joy Griffin (husband Tag); and her nephew, Kevin Gorden, whom she relied on for many of her needs. She also leaves many cousins that were extremely close to her and her family.
She was a foster grandmother through TVCCA’s Foster Grandparent program. Janice also sang for many years with the Laurel-Aires, an all women’s barbershop singing group and formed many close friendships from doing so.
Her nieces and nephews want to thank Sheltering Arms and Harrington Court for their excellent care. She was beloved by all there. Special thanks also goes to Kathy Diodato of Norwich for all her help.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 11, at Maplewood Cemetery, 184 Salem Turnpike, Norwich.
