Mitchell remains unbeaten in NECC baseball tourney

New London — Mitchell College is in the driver's seat after the second day of the New England Collegiate Conference baseball tournament.

The top-seeded Mariners beat defending champion Lesley University 15-6 Saturday to remain the only undefeated team in the double-eliminatio­n tournament.

They'll play second-seeded Lesley (27-10) again at 11 a.m. Sunday in the championsh­ip round. Lesley stayed alive by defeating Becker College 164 in the losers' bracket on Saturday.

Jeremy Santos, James Rangel and Steven Pagan all hit home runs during a five-run sixth for Mitchell. The Mariners (29-8) pinned the loss on Lesley ace Tom Muratore (9-1) who lasted just 2.2 innings and allowed nine runs. The Mariners scored seven runs in third to take a 9-0 lead.

Santos finished with three hits and three RBI and Garet Griffin had a double, triple and two RBI, while Pagan and Peter Abate had two hits and two RBI apiece. Reliever Brian Ricker (32) earned the win, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out six and walking three in 5.1 innings.

In other games:

• UConn Avery Point swept a doublehead­er from the Western Connecticu­t State junior varsity, winning the opener 7-0 and the second game 22-3 in five innings. Waterford's Alex Petchark was 4-for-7 with two homers, a double, four runs scored and five RBI, Mike Savino had five hits, five RBI and scored four times and Mike Chiovitti had five hits, four RBI and scored four runs on the day for the Pointers (26-10-1). Mystic's Trevor Bolduc won the opener, pitching a five-hitter with six strikeouts and three walks.

Women's lacrosse

• Coast Guard's season came to an end, as the No. 5 Bears lost to No. 1 Babson 17-1 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament semifinals. Freshman Luisa Santos scored for Coast Guard (12-7), which set a program record for wins and made its first NEWMAC tournament in its four years as a varsity program.

Women's track

• Coast Guard earned its best finish in program history at the final day of the Division III New England Championsh­ip in Cambridge, Mass. The Bears finished in third place with 60 points, trailing champion MIT (161 points) and Williams (69 points).

Coast Guard freshman Kaitlyn Mooney won the 5K race by 20 seconds, finishing in 17 minutes, 11.75 seconds.

The 4x800 relay of freshman Maeve Roach, sophomore Olivia Suski, Mooney and senior Ashlee Johnson ran a school-record time 9:31.13 for third place.

The 4x400 of junior Caroline Jenkins, sophomores Anna Beck, Madeline Colwell and Adora Lawrence also took third place, running the second-fastest time in school history (3:59.11). Also earning All-New England Honors on the track were Lawrence and Beck in the 400, taking fourth (58.09) and fifth (58.47), respective­ly.

Senior Gabbie Troise set another school record while taking third in the hammer with a throw of 165 feet, one-half inch. She was also fifth in the shot with a distance of 39-7.75. Coast Guard's final All-New England finisher of the day was sophomore Hollis Roush, taking fifth in the heptathlon with 3,862 points.

• Connecticu­t College recorded its second-best finish and second-highest point total in school history at the New England Division III Championsh­ips, placing seventh with 33 points. Junior Shannon Kennedy and senior Aly Saperstein each broke a school record.

Kennedy finished second in the heptathlon with 4,363 points, which eclipsed her previous program standard of 4,352. Saperstein set the school record in the javelin with a fourth-place distance of 134-3.

Other notable performers included sophomore Koko Mensah, junior Emily Senatore and freshman Tarvis Hintlian. Mensah placed second in the shot put (42-9.5) and eighth in the discus (124-3) while Senatore was third in the discus (134-9) and Hintlian fifth in the steeplecha­se (11:36.12).

Men's track

• Conn College placed 22nd with nine points at the New England Division III Championsh­ip in Cambridge, Mass. Junior Austin DiMartino scored the first points for the Camels by finishing fourth in the decathlon with a personal-best 5,222 points. Senior Connor Trapp anchored the 4x800 meter relay to a fifth in 7:57.88. The group also included sophomores Christian Carr-Locke, Josh Simensky and Jacob Brill-Weill.

• Coast Guard took home seventh place at the Division III New England Championsh­ip, finishing with 31 points. The 4x800 relay team of junior Sydney Johnson, freshman Josiah Davis, junior Benjamin Taminger and senior Brett Foster took first place in 7:38.14.

The 4x400 quartet of juniors Nicholas Frystak and Matthew Perlich and seniors Luke Rehfuss and Raeford Penny ran the second-fastest time in school history with a second-place finish (3:16.91).

The 4x100 team of Penny, junior Michael Bishop, sophomore Miguel Moroles and junior Jacob Pawlina were fifth with a time of 42.56. Top individual finishers for the Bears earning All-New England honors were Rehfuss in the 400 hurdles (fourth place, 54.13), freshman Adam VanDeren in the 3K steeplecha­se (eighth place, 9:49.59) and junior Ben Zarlengo (sixth place, 172-6).
