New London — Martin Yavener, son of Max and Shirley Yavener, born March 6, 1932, died Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven.

When you think of the words, unconditional love, the definition would be Martin Yavener. Most everyone who knew him, knew him as Uncle Marty. A man filled with compassion, laughter, great stories, great jokes and above all, love for family and friends. Uncle Marty served lunch to the seniors, served meals to the homeless and those in need of a helping hand. He demonstrated great leadership to the synagogue. He was the recipient of the Howard Ilson award for longtime distinguished service. However, the greatest contribution was the love and friendship he gave to everyone in his life. Marty played an integral part in the lives of all who knew him. He was the one to always offer hope, encouragement, a kind word and a smile. Uncle Marty will be missed, and our tears are for our loss, yet they are happy tears for a life well led.

A graduate of Bulkeley School in 1950, he served in the Navy and Marine Corps 1951 to 1955. Using the GI Bill, he attended Mitchell College and received an associate’s degree. He attended UConn and graduated in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree. He received his master’s degree from Eastern Connecticut State College. He obtained a sixth-year in school administration from the University of Bridgeport.

Marty began his teaching career at Eastern Point School where he taught fourth and fifth grades. He was also a Title I math teacher. He became an assistant principal at Pleasant Valley School until he retired in 1990.

He was president of the New London Hebrew Seniors, a member of the Jewish War Veterans Post 160, and a former member of Phi Delta Kappa.

Marty was predeceased by his sister, Lenore Shapero; and nephew, Harold Shapero.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Ellen and Steve Zane, Beth and Jake Jacobs, Julie Shapero and Craig and Kari Shapero. Marty had five nieces and nephews, Jacqueline Jacobs, Matthew Jacobs, Benjamin Shapero, Max Shapero and Dokken Shapero; and by a community who loved him.

The funeral for Uncle Marty will be held beginning 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at Temple Emanu-El, 29 Dayton Road, Waterford. Interment will follow in Ohave Sholom Cemetery, Waterford.
