ECC’s top seed falls as Ledyard defeats Bacon

Groton — Ledyard High School scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning and held on to beat top-seeded Bacon Academy 4-2 in the quarterfin­als of the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference baseball tournament Wednesday night.

The No. 8 Colonels (13-9) play East Lyme in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday. No. 2 Waterford plays No. 3 Griswold, a 5-3 winner over St. Bernard, in the other semifinal at 4 p.m.

Weston Bruce singled home Ken Turner to break a 2-2 tie and Patrick Bora added an RBI groundout. Bora then retired Bacon in order in the bottom of the ninth for the win. Bruce was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Cade Walters scored twice for Ledyard.

Bradley Kent had an RBI single to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

• Matt Malcom homered and scored four runs as No. 5 East Lyme beat No. 4 Plainfield 8-3 in the quarterfin­als of the ECC tournament. Malcom had three hits, Owen Robbins was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI, Tom Mason singled and doubled and Eric Patterson had two hits for East Lyme (12-10). Blake Bragaw was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits and three runs over six innings with seven strikeouts and five walks. In other games: • Jared Valentin pitched a one-hitter as No. 4 Cromwell defeated No. 5 Old Lyme in the Shoreline Conference tournament quarterfin­als. The game was suspended Tuesday with Cromwell leading 3-0 in the fourth inning. Ryan Ramella had the only hit for the Wildcats (13-7) and pitcher Hunter Thornton took the loss.

• Montville closed out its regular season with an 11-6 win over RHAM in a nonleague game. Ryan Champagne had two hits and scored four runs, John Domijan had two hits and drove in three runs and Byron Dewaine and Brandon Drake had two hits each for Montville (15-6). Jacob Plikus was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits over five innings with five strikeouts.
