Chambers paces Vikings to win in ECC softball tourney

East Lyme — Alex Chambers doubled and homered as No. 6 East Lyme High School beat No. 11 St. Bernard 10-3 in the first round of the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference softball tournament Wednesday.

The Vikings (12-9), who led 9-0 after three innings, host No. 3 Montville in a quarterfin­al game at 4 p.m. Thursday. Jaylyn Mueller had a three-run double and Isabel Siciliano and winning pitcher Olivia Quagan each had two hits for East Lyme.

Emily Nelson singled and doubled for St. Bernard. In other games: • Rachel Miller pitched a four-hitter as No. 5 Waterford beat No. 12 Windham 7-0 in the first round of the ECC tournament. The Lancers (12-9) play No. 13 Ledyard in the quarterfin­als at 4 p.m. Thursday at Griswold. Gina McKittrick had three hits and scored twice, Alyson Sanford had a two-run single and Ciana Chiappone, Madison Nott (two RBI), Kyleigh Pinell and Ashlee Hancock had doubles for Waterford.

• Old Lyme was held to two hits in a 13-0 loss to Hale-Ray in the Shoreline Conference. The Wildcats (12-7, 10-5) will play Valley Regional in a Shoreline quarterfin­als on Friday.

• After getting ousted from the ECC tournament, St. Bernard closed out its regular season with a 25-0 win over Grasso Tech. Emily Nelson and Meghan Bergeron combined to pitch a three-hitter and Nelson had four hits, including a triple for the Saints (11-9). Tainia Quinones and Bergeron had a single and two doubles each, Trinity Rashan had three hits and Briana Beverly and Maggie D'Amico had two hits each.

Boys' golf

• East Lyme wrapped up the ECC Division I title with a 7-0 win over defending champion Norwich Free Academy. Evan Kluge and Matt Orefice shared medalist honors with 41s and Ben Bohmbach (42), Logan Rolfe (44) and Quenten Dean (45) also won their matches for the Vikings (14-1, 5-0). NFA is 9-12, 4-2.

• Stonington picked up a pair of wins, beating Wheeler 7-0 and Old Lyme 6-1. Jack Glenn of Stonington was the medalist with a 35 and won his match against Old Lyme along with teammates Aiden Adams and Justin Holland. Grant Hamilton and Jacob Geary of Stonington (13-4) halved their matches with Corey Drummond and Tom Creagan of Old Lyme (13-3), which beat Wheeler 7-0.

• Fitch beat Montville 6-1. Charlie Bresnahan, Nishant Patel, Drew McCormick and Ryan Sherman of Fitch (7-7) won their matches while Sam Gaboury of Montville (1-13) was the medalist with a 2-under-par 34.

Girls' tennis

• Old Lyme closed out the regular season with a 6-1 win over East Hampton/Hale-Ray in a Shoreline Conference match. Brynn McGlinchey, Emma Bass and Sophia Pecher-Kohout won their matches for Old Lyme (15-5), which swept the doubles.
