Montville, Waterford softball cruise and and will meet in Class M second round today

Montville — Alexis Michon dominated from the mound and at the plate as 10th-seeded Montville rolled to a 13-1 victory over No. 23 New Fairfield in the opening round of the CIAC Class M softball tournament on Wednesday.

Michon pitched a three-hitter and struck out 17 while going 2-for-2 with a grand slam and double while reaching base all four times as the Indians (18-6) advanced to Wednesday's second round at home against Eastern Connecticu­t Conference rival Waterford at 4 p.m.

The No. 26 Lancers defeated No. 7 Norwich Tech 15-0.

Angel Skulczyck added a double and triple with two runs scored for Montville while Maggie Wainwright was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Jillian Murallo was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. In other games: • Rachel Miller (six innings) and Ashley Goldstein (one) combined to pitch a no-hitter in Waterford's win over Norwich Tech. Miller struck out nine and Goldstein two for the Lancers (14-10) while Madison Nott led a 19-hit attack with three hits, including a pair of two-run homers and five RBI. Ashlee Hancock also had three hits with a single, double and triple while Taylor Lee double twice, scored twice and drove in two runs.

• Sara Cote scored the go-ahead run on an error in the bottom of the sixth as No. 6 Norwich Free Academy rallied to defeat No. 27 Greenwich 2-1 in the Class LL first round. The Wildcats (19-5) will host No. 22 Staples in Wednesday's second round. Trailing 1-0, NFA scored both of its runs in the sixth. Hailee Schrader tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a base hit by Julie Vincent. After Cote reached on a fielder's choice, she came around to score when Bailey Comeau singled followed by a throwing error. Comeau pitched a 1-2-3 seventh with two strikeouts to earn the win for Sophia DiCocco, who scattered three hits and allowed one run over six innings.

• No. 14 East Lyme broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the fifth, and the Vikings went on to defeat No. 19 Woodstock Academy 6-1 in the Class L first round. East Lyme (14-10) will play at No. 3 Brookfield in Wednesday's second round. Isabel Siciliano had two hits, including a run-scoring double in the decisive fifth for the Vikings. She also pitched a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Olivia Quagan added two hits and three RBI.

• Abby Flakus went 3-for-4, including a double, with five RBI and a run as No. 12 Stonington blanked No. 21 Valley Regional 14-0 in the Class M first round. Erin Craig went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI for Stonington (15-7) and Tori LoPresto went 3-for-4 and scored twice. The Bears will play at No. 5 Granby on Wednesday.

• Audrey Gavin went the distance and struck out nine while adding a pair of hits as No. 13 Old Lyme overcame an early 3-0 deficit to defeat No. 20 St. Bernard 8-3 in the Class S first round. Sarah Hayward added two hits and an RBI and Grace Lathrop had a triple and two RBI for the Wildcats (14-8), who visit No. 4 Wamogo in Wednesday's second round. Taina Quinones was 3-for-4 and scored twice for the Saints, who finish 1110, while Briana Beverly was 2-for-4 with Shania Riviere had a two-run double.
