Svab lifts Saints past Thomaston in Class S

Thomaston — Connor Svab went 4-for-4 with three RBI, including a go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, and pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn the win as No. 19 St. Bernard fought past No. 14 Thomaston 5-3 in the first round of the CIAC Class S baseball tournament on Tuesday.

Starter Max Adams allowed just three hits over seven innings for St. Bernard and Will Kane added a two-run single for the Saints (1211), who will play at No. 3 St. Paul on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Svab also stole three bases in a game that was delayed by lightning. In other games: • Ken Turner pitched a one-hitter as No. 18 Ledyard edged No. 15 Rockville 1-0 in the Class M first round. Turner did not walk a batter and struck out 11 for the Colonels (1410), who will play at No. 2 Granby, a 5-4 winner over No. 31 Brookfield, in Wednesday's second round at 3:30 p.m. Turner also scored the game's only run in the fifth inning after doubling, moving to third on a single by James Laconico, and scoring on the front end of a double steal. Laconico and Bradley Kent had two hits apiece for Ledyard.

• Doug Delacruz allowed only two hits over five shutout innings as No. 5 Montville d feated No. 28 Waterbury Career 7-0 in the Class M first round. The Indians (16-6) will host No. 12 St. Joseph in Wednesday's second round. St. Joseph defeated Norwich Tech 12-0. Colby Miner had three hits and two RBI for Montville whle John Domijan hit a two-run homer and Delacruz, Ryan Champagne and Byron Dewaine each had two hits.

• No. 11 Old Lyme won its Class S opener with 14-0 victory over No. 22 Putnam. Griffin Power allowed only one hit over five innings to earn the win (he struck out 10 and did not walk a batter) as the the Wildcats (14-8) advanced to Wednesday's second round at No. 6 Notre Dame of Fairfield, a 6-0 winner over No. 27 Gilbert. Jace Funaro powered the Old Lyme offense with a double, home run and three RBI while Dave Kendall had a single, double and three RBI and Powers, Jon Balocca and Ryan Ramella each added two hits.

• Noah Rubino allowed just one hit over 6.2 innings as No. 10 Guilford knocked off ECC tournament champion East Lyme 6-3 in the Class S first round. Rubino walked three and struck out 11 for the Indians. The No. 23 Vikings, who finish 14-11, scored all three runs in the seventh, including a two-run triple by Matt Malcom.
