Bears outlast Old Lyme to reach quarters

Stonington — Hannah Lamb scored six goals and Kate Johnson added three goals and two assists as No. 6 Stonington edged No. 11 Old Lyme 13-11 in the second round of the CIAC Class S girls' lacross tournament on Tuesday.

Emma Sabbadini had two goals and two assists and Cat Cassata added two goals and an assist for the Bears (15-4), fresh off their win in the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference tournament final.

Goalie Alexis Scott added eight saves and Olivia Feliciano and Hannah Pratt each had an assist for Stonington, which will play at third-seeded East Catholic in Thursday's quarterfin­als. The Eagles beat No. 14 Waterford 13-.

Lydia Tinnerello had two goals and three assists, Daisy Colvin had three goals and an assist, and Paige Britton and Anna Sather each scored three times for the Wildcats (11-8). Also, Bianca Tinnerello had a goal and Emily Erne had 11 saves. In other games: • Caroline Healy had three goals and three assists and Karlie Rowe scored five times as No. 11 East Lyme downed No. 6 Bacon Academy 18-12 in the Class M second round. Caroline Real had two goals and two assists, Olivia Facchini scored three times, Hannah Gellar had two goals and an assist, and Julia Bates had a goal and two assists for East Lyme (12-7), which will play at No. 3 Pomeperaug in Thursday's night's quarterfin­als (5). Maya Rose also had 11 saves for the Vikings. Molly Kelly had five goals for the Bobcats (12-6).

• Sophie Spencer scored five goals as No. 2 Branford rolled to a 19-5 win over No. 15 Fitch in the Class M second round. Maggie O'Leary scored five goals for the Falcons, who finish 10-8, while Zoe Pearse scored one.

H.S. girls' golf

• Waterford's Caroline Petchark shot a 2-over-par 38 to win medalist honors and help the Lancers win the team title at the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference tournament at Quinnatiss­et Country Club in Thompson.

Waterford ended Woodstock's three-year reign with a medal total of 192, five strokes better than the Centaurs. Bacon Academy finished third with 220 and East Lyme was fourth with 220.

NFA's Kuan Fei Chen, playing in only her fourth match after breaking her hand earlier this season, finished second with a 38 while Stonington's Liz Crandall and Woodstock's Kailey LaChappell­e tied for third with 45s, East Lyme's Sarah Johnson was fifth with a 49 and five players tied for sixth, including Waterford's Sydney Tabor and Sydney Hauser at 50.

H.S. boys' tennis

• Ledyard's Chris Charette and Trevor Hutchins upset No. 6 Dylan Karp and Ian Stapleton of Avon 6-3, 6-1 in the third round of the Class M tournament. The duo will play No. 3 Stephen Blinder-Drew Berkin of Weston in Wednesday's quarterfin­als. The Colonels' Nate McCracken, seeded 13, lost to No. 4 Arjun Chandra-Mohanty of Avon 6-1, 6-1 in the third round of singles play.

• In Class S, Old Lyme's top-seeded doubles team of Morgan Greenho and George Danes reached the semifinals with a pair of wins. They defeated Nikhileshw­ar Anaparthi-Pulkit Nagpal of Rocky Hill 6-0, 6-4 in the third round and No. 8 Sam Jacinto-Cody Swanson of Cromwell 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the quarters. The will play No. 12 Robert Costello-Patrick Roth of East Catholic in the semis.

Two other doubles teams lost in the quarters, No. 6 Quinn Hartmann-Judson O'Brien of Old Lyme and No. 10 Filip Aubrecht-Kyle Remmert of Stonington, who lost 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 to No. 2 Zach Kwalick-Spencer Sivilla of Litchfield. Stonington's William Michelson reached the singles quarters before losing to No. 5 Andrew Ray of Nonnewaug 6-4, 6-1.

H.S. girls' tennis

• Gabby Dellacono, Charlotte Johnstone, Mackenzie Sadler and Hannah Middleton-Krancberg all won singles matches as No. 2 Stonington overwhelme­d No. No. 10 Old Lyme 7-0 in the Class S quarterfin­als.

The doubles teams of Margot Goodman-Ainsley Johnstone, Phoebe Townsend-Brielle Fratoni-Jaskiewicz and Holly Foster-Cassie Onorato also won for the Bears (17-1), who host No. 14 Northwest Catholic in today's semifinals at 3 p.m.

H.S. boys' golf

• Montville won its first ECC Division II match of the season with a 4-3 win over Bacon Academy at Norwich GC. The Indians (2-13-1, 1-8) won the two-point medal score 181-185 and picked up wins from medalist Sam Gaboury (35) and Jack Minas (45).

• NFA finished last in a tri-match at Tallwood Country Club in Hebron. The Wildcats (9-14) finished with 189 strokes and trailed Killingly (157) and East Catholic (161). Seamus Sullivan led NFA with a 44 and Jackson Guertin added a 45.

• Stonington's Jack Glenn shot a 40 to earn medalist honors as Stonington defeated Wheeler 7-0. Wheeler (2-12-1) also lost to Tourtellot­te 4-3. Jacob Geary added a 42 and Grant Hamilton a 43 for the Bears (14-4) while Sam Taylor shot a 57 to lead the Lions.

• Old Saybrook's Jay DePalerno and Old Lyme's Pat Looney shared medalist honors, each shooting a 3-over-par 38 at Black Hall Club, and the Rams came away with a 174-177 win over their rival. Tom Creagan added a 45 for the Wildcats while Peter Macadam and Corey Drummond each shot 47.

Sun's Alyssa Thomas feted

Connecticu­t Sun forward Alyssa Thomas was named the WNBA Eastern Conference Players of the Week for games played May 18-27.

Thomas led the East in both minutes (31.9) and rebounds (10) and averaged 16.3 points and 4.3 assists for the Sun (3-0).

It's the third time in career that she's won WNBA Player of the Week honors.
