Jane Cannon

Waterford — Jane Hopkins Cannon, 89, passed away on Friday, May 25, 2018, with her loving daughter by her side.

Jane was born an only child on Sept. 9, 1928, to Maurice and Theodora Hopkins. She grew up in North Philadelphia, graduated from Germantown High School as well as Drexel University and was a proud lifelong “Philly girl.” She was employed as an executive secretary for Ford Motor Company.

After marriage, Jane moved to the Black Point section of Niantic and then to Waterford where she and her husband, Thomas J. Cannon Sr., raised their family. Jane was a talented artist, seamstress, cook, Sunday school teacher, and Boy and Girl Scout leader.

Jane was predeceased by her husband, Thomas J. Cannon Sr.; and subsequently her special friend, Gennis “Peter” Elks.

Jane is survived by her children, Thomas (Cindy) and Kathleen Jane Arabic (Stan); and three grandchildren. Her gifted grandchildren, Christopher, Bethany and Michael brought her tremendous satisfaction and joy and each uniquely reflects the fruits of Jane’s influence.

Jane was a loving, caring, supportive and selfless mother and grandmother who consistently put the needs of her family above her own. Through Jane’s recent years of health challenges, she persevered and lived life to love. She found strength in the beautiful gifts of life, including spending time with family, music, chocolate ice cream and sunsets. She never criticized or complained and remained positive during challenges. With her open arms, twinkling eyes, and sweet, genuine smile, she displayed never-ending love and showed those around her what it means to love. We are thankful for the loving roles Jane played in our lives and the love she left behind. Jane may have left us, but the memories of her will remain in the hearts she touched forever.

Her family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2018, at the Mystic Funeral Home, located on Route 1 in Mystic. A service will be held at noon Monday, June 4, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic.
