Lawrence “Paul” Egan

-

New London — Lawrence “Paul” Egan passed away April 12, 2018. Born Aug. 23, 1928, in Winthrop, Mass., he was the son of the late Lawrence and Margaret S. Egan (beloved longtime city clerk of Milford).

His family moved to Milford, where he graduated from Milford High School as a standout athlete. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Milford and married the late Natalie Ford.

Paul was a photoengraver at Graphic Color Plate in Stamford for over 30 years. He and his family resided in the Lordship section of Stratford, “as close to the water as possible.”

Paul was an accomplished sailor. He sailed many of the Bermuda Cup Races and often set out alone to sail the coast of Maine on his Seawind, The Mandalay.

His love of the water eventually took him to New London. There, he purchased Fort Trumbull Marina, which he operated almost to the end of his life with the help of his grandson Trevor Miller, and the many helping hands of his extended FTM family. We thank them for their love and loyalty. He resided in Salem with his partner Mary Granchamp until her death in 2003.

Of all the things he loved in life, he valued nothing more than his days at Fort Trumbull Marina, with his faithful golden retriever, Buddy, enjoying conversations with friends of all ages and walks of life.

Paul was a dedicated supporter of the Golden Retriever Rescue Club, The American Cancer Society, and St. Judes Hospital. He was a fanatic supporter of the women’s UConn basketball team, a life member of Thames Yacht Club, and a faithful member of the Montville Polish American Club.

Paul leaves his beloved children, son Charlie (Margaret) Egan of New York City, and daughters Sheila and Paula Jane Egan, both of Milford; his grandchildren Geoff, Trevor and Corinne Miller, Shelby and Jim Coughlin, and Addie Egan; his sister Linda Bowen; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Greta (Michael) Lenahan and Sheila Egan.

A Celebration of his Life will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, at Fort Trumbull Marina.
