Huskies rally to defeat LIU Brooklyn in NCAA baseball tournament

Conway, S.C. — UConn overcame an early 3-0 deficit to defeat LIU Brooklyn 10-3 in an eliminatio­n game at the NCAA baseball tournament's Conway Regional on Saturday.

The Huskies (36-21-1) will have to win twice today and once on Monday to advance to the Super Regional round. They play host Coastal Carolina, an 11-6 loser to Washington on Saturday night, in another eliminatio­n game at noon.

Trailing 3-0 in the fourth, former Wheeler High School star Troy Stefanski grounded a two-run single to center to score two runs and designated hitter Christian Fedko tied the game moments later with a double.

Reliever Tim Cate (5-4) worked 5.1 scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed only two hits and struck out six.

H.S. boys’ lacrosse

• Fourth-seeded Granby ended St. Bernard/Wheeler's state tournament run with a 16-3 win over the Saints in the Class S quarterfin­als.

Scott Pion had one goal and one assist for the fifth-seeded Saints, who finish with a 14-4 record, while Roland Long and Billy Niles each scored a goal, Pat Brady had one assist and goalie Danny Schroeder made 14 saves.

H.S. tennis

• CIAC officials decided to postpone Day 1 of the State Open girls' tournament until Sunday at 1 p.m. Singles will be played at Conard High School and doubles at Hall. Both schools are in West Hartford. Stonington's Gabby Dellacono, the 2017 singles runner-up, is the top seed. Officials hope to play qualifying, first and second round matches. The State Open boys' tournament will also begin on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Amity.
