UConn eliminated from NCAA baseball tournament

Stonington’s Dellacono advances in State Open

Conway, S.C. — Former Wheeler High School standout Troy Stefanski went 5-for-5 in his final collegiate game as UConn had its season come to an end with a 9-6 loss to Washington on Sunday in the championsh­ip game of the NCAA Division I baseball tournament's Conway Regional.

The Huskies (37-22-1) led 6-1 heading to the bottom of the third inning, but Washington scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game and added three runs in the bottom of the eighth to win it.

In the first inning Stefanski's RBI single and John Toppa's two-run single gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead. And Toppa, Chris Winkel and Conor Moriarty drove in runs in the third. Zac Susi was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for UConn.

UConn advanced to the championsh­ip round with a 6-5 win over host Coastal Carolina. Christian Fedko broke a 5-5 tie with a two-out homer in the bottom of the eighth. Coastal Carolina had tied the game at 5-5 with three runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Isaac Feldstein's two-run double in the fifth gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead. Anthony Prato hit a solo homer in the seventh, Susi followed with a single and Feldstein hit a two-run homer to give UConn a 5-2 lead.

H.S. girls' tennis

• Stonington junior Gabby Dellacono advanced to the third round of the CIAC State Open with a pair of 8-0 wins. Dellacono, the top seed and last season's runnerup, beat Olivia Rizzuto of Suffield in the first round and Sara Farnoli of Westbrook in the second round. Third-round play begins today at Yale at noon.

Anna Slopak of NFA and Samantha Cote of Fitch were elminated in the second round. Slopak, a freshman, beat Nellie Drewry of Sacred Heart 8-5 in the first round before losing to Jovanna Gaetano of West Haven 8-1. Cote, a senior, beat Xenia Efimov of Fairfield Ludlowe by default in the qualifying round, beat Elena Tormo of Holy Cross 8-2 in the first round then lost to Isabella Koziol of Wilton 8-1.

Charlotte Johnstone of Stonington beat Abigail Gorra of Shepaug Valley 8-2 in the qualifying round before losing in the first round to No. 3 Lilly Ma of Darien 8-1. Keelin Hurtt of Old Lyme lost by default in the first round and teammate Brynn McGlinchey lost to Lorenza Inserra of Mercy 8-4 in the qualifying round.

In doubles, play, Stonington's Margot Goodman and Ainsley Johnstone were eliminated in the second round with an 8-2 loss to Niyati Hora and Sameeksha Agrawal of Glastonbur­y. Goodman and Johnstone beat Hebtalla Mohammed and Gabriella Storo of Rockville 8-0 in the first round. Teammates Brielle Fratoni-Jaskiewicz and Phoebe Townsend lost by default in the qualifying round.

Shannon Nosal and Kellie Sablone of Old Lyme were ousted in the first round with an 8-3 loss to Hannah Hipona and Catalina Betancur of Amity. Nosal and Sablone beat Eunice Kim and Zoe Rogers of Shelton 8-4 in the qualifying round.

H.S. boys' tennis

• Old Lyme's Morgan Greenho and George Danes lost in the quarterfin­als of the CIAC State Open at Amity. Greenho and Danes, who won the Class S title on Thursday, fell to Robert Israel and Noah Gulla of Hand 6-1, 6-2.

Road racing

• Waterford's Justin Madry and Catherine Saucier were the winners at the Oswegatchi­e School 5K. Madry won the race with a time of 19:43 and Saucier was the top female finisher, coming in ninth at 23:51. Also finishing in the top 10 were Benjamin Yanni-Lazarus of Westerly (21:11), Nick Bouchard of Westerly (21:12), Tom Palazzo of Waterford (21:22), Mathew Kotch of New London (22:33), George Neyarapall­y of Mystic (22:34), William Perkins of Waterford (22:49), Todd Helweg of Wethersfie­ld (23:45) and Elle Dibuono of Waterford (24:52).

• Jeffrey Vuono of Westerly won the Pawcatuck Lions 5K Road Race on Saturday with a time of 19:36. Carol Rose of Ledyard was the top women's finisher, coming in eighth with a time of 23:23. Also making the top 10 were Eric Ciocca of Northampto­n, Mass., (19:57), Brent Wiltshire of Stonington (20:46), Tom Smith of Mystic (21:14), Jim Tiernan of Pawcatuck (21:48), Kevin Gallerani of Uncasville (22:45), Bob Gralton of Gales Ferry (22:58), Scott Wilbur of Pawcatuck (23:30) and Kate Johnston of Bradford, R.I. (23:35).

• Samuel Alexander of Mystic won the Twilight Trails Run on Friday, covering the 7.4 miles in Groton in 41:23. Rebecca Snelson of New London was the top owmen's finisher, coming in sixth at 50:15. Also making the top 10 were Eric Blake of West Hartford (41:26), Mathew Ridley of of Mystic (46:57), Edward Wilson of New London (47:40), Jeff Walker of Westerly (49:25), Connor McNellis of Albuquerqu­e, N.M. (50:44), Michael Fleming of New London (51:09), Jason Kudron of New Haven (51:44) and T.J. Dooling of Pawcatuck (51:58).
