George Allard
Lyme — George Sherwood Allard, 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, with his beloved wife, Judy, by his side at Bride Brook Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Niantic.
He was born in New Haven, on Sept. 21, 1926, the son of the late George S. Allard and Marjorie (McClure) Allard. George was raised in Essex and had been a resident of Lyme since 1948.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. He served aboard the USS Oakland as a seaman 1st class. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart earned during an encounter near Okinawa and was present at the Japanese surrender in 1945. He then was commissioned to the USS Wilkes Barre for relief work in China.
He was employed by the Marlin Firearms Company in North Haven as an industrial engineer. George retired from Marlin Firearms as the general manager of the Marlin Realty Corporation located on Willow Street in New Haven. He was a member of the American Legion since 1946 and was awarded lifetime membership on his 50th anniversary. Other noted memberships included the VFW Post in Old Saybrook and the New Haven Gridiron Club.
Besides his wife of 65 years, Judy (Renninger) Allard; he is survived by his daughter, Katherine Allard of Summertown, Tenn.; his sons, Robert Allard of Lawrenceville, Ga., Matthew Allard of Lyme and Keith Allard of Old Saybrook. He also leaves his grandchildren, Kalaisha Watrous of Portland, Ore., Justine Allard of Salem, Devon Allard of Groton and Vaughn Allard of Lyme; and his great-granddaughter, Evelyn Allard.
A graveside service with the rendering of military honors will be held at a later time in the Fountain Hill Cemetery in Deep River.
