George Degnan
Coatesville, Pa. — George Leo Degnan, 81, went peacefully in his sleep to meet the Lord on Sunday, June 10, 2018.
George was a lifelong resident of Coatesville, Pa., leaving the area in 2008 to go live with his daughter.
George was a seaman in the U.S. Navy, serving from 19541962 aboard the destroyer USS Charles P. Cecil, DDR-835, where he received a National Defense Service medal. While on a furlough from Elkton, Md., he found his way to Coatesville, Pa., where he met and fell in love with the love of his life, Olga (Krawchuck) Degnan, who succumbed on Sept. 1, 2007. They married in 1955, and shared 52 years together.
George worked for the Budd Co. in Eagle, Pa., (formerly known as the Gindy Manufacturing Corp.), and Downingtown, Pa., as a welder. After the closing of the plant, George held a maintenance job before landing a position with the Coatesville VA Medical Center in 1980, as an employee of Medical Administration Service in their mailroom. George loved his job as he processed the mail. He had a motorized cart and delivered the mail throughout the large campus facility. He was very proud and honored to serve his fellow veterans, and that he got to see his daughter and son-in-law daily as they also worked there. He retired in 1990.
George was an avid Philadelphia sports fan (especially the Phillies and Eagles), and never missed watching a game. He loved taking yearly trips to Pennsylvania to visit family and loved to talk on the phone to his family and friends.
In addition to his late wife Olga, George is survived by a daughter, Marcia Sage of Charleston, S.C., wife of Jeffrey Sage; a son, George Degnan of West Chester, Pa., husband of Diane Degnan; two sisters, Judy Chappell of Merritt Island, Fla., and Nancy Myllymacki of Northport, Fla., and New London. He adored his five grandchildren, Ryan, Jason, Brendan, Justin and Kimberly. He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Ballard of New London.
