SEWER MAIN BREAK SHUTS DOWN PORTION OF TILLEY AT BANK STREET IN NEW LONDON

-

New London — A contractor performing crosswalk work on Bank Street struck and damaged a sewer main pipe on Wednesday, resulting in road closures and detours until the repair work is completed.

Roads are expected to reopen on Saturday afternoon.

The sewer pipe break occurred at the intersection of Bank and Tilley streets, near the fire station. Electric Boat was notified, barricades installed and lights at Bank Street, Tilley Street and Spar Yard will remain yellow to alleviate any congestion.

Police also are expected to be assigned to the area to assist motorists.

Veolia Water is working with other contractors on repairs. There will be no access to Tilley Street from Bank Street during the repairs. Instead, motorists should use Blinman to get to Tilley.

Bank Street at Spar Yard will turn into a single lane for the remaining length of Bank Street to State Street. Detour signs have been placed at Bank and Howard streets.

Green Street to Tilley Street still is open in both directions.

A representative from Veolia Water, the city’s water utility, was not immediately available to comment on the projected cost of the repairs. Colonna Concrete and Asphalt was installing concrete crosswalks at the time of the sewer pipe break.
