The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT will hold a Business After Hours networking event at the Norwich Spa at Foxwoods Resort Casino, 350 Trolley Line Blvd., Mashantucket on Wednesday, June 20, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Admission is $15 for Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT members, $25 for non-members, and includes food, refreshments, and entry to the evening's door prize drawing. WORKSHOPS

Ignite, a program of Thames River Innovation Place, and the Town of Groton's Economic Development office will co-host Clicks & Bricks: Social Media for Small Businesses and Startups on Tuesday, June 19. The special small business education seminar will feature Maria Miranda from Miranda Creative and John Michael Coronado from Incredible Weight Loss Center. The Connecticut Department of Labor is offering jobseekers in eastern Connecticut opportunities to meet with area companies every other Wednesday to discuss possible employment. The summer-long series of “Micro Career Fairs,” also known as “Employer Wednesdays,” will host local employers at the state's new Montville job center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every other Wednesday to review résumés and meet with job candidates. The Montville American Job Center is located at 601 Norwich-New London Turnpike Suite 1, Uncasville. Jobseekers planning to attend are required to register on the system by visiting www.CTHires.com. The next event is scheduled for June 20.

HONORS

Robert Ackley, who worked at Davis-Standard in Pawcatuck for 46 years, was inducted into the Plastics Hall of Fame during the National Plastics Exposition in Orlando, Fla., on May 6. With his induction, Ackley joins the ranks of the industry's most notable pioneers and leaders. Ackley started as a draftsman out of high school, attended college at night and earned his degree in mechanical engineering from Mitchell College, followed by an executive MBA from the University of New Haven. GIVING

State Sen. Paul Formica joined Comcast at the State Capitol on June 5 to recognize four local student scholars receiving the statewide Leaders & Achievers Scholarship and Comcast Founders Award. Erin Patten of Waterford, Kevin Ruiz of New London, Emma Sked of Old Lyme and Christopher Thomson of Old Saybrook were each awarded a $1,000 Leaders & Achievers Scholarship, which is awarded to students who strive to achieve their full potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their school.

Out of 44 statewide recipients, Ruiz was also chosen to receive the Comcast Founders Scholarship, which awards one Connecticut student an additional $9,000. The Founders Scholarship honors the legacy of Comcast founder Ralph Roberts and his commitment to community service. Ruiz will be attending the University of Connecticut in the fall and majoring in electrical engineering.

The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center has received a $5,000 grant from Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation, from the foundation's “Environmental Education and Stewardship Initiative.” This grant will support environmental education programs through Groton Submarine Base's Youth Center and Regional Multicultural Magnet School in New London.

Charter Oak Federal Credit Union held its annual scholarship reception on June 6, where President and Chief Executive Officer Brian A. Orenstein presented 45 college scholarships totaling $90,000. For the third year in a row, the credit union committed to awarding one $2,000 college scholarship to one college-bound senior at each high school within New London and Windham counties with an attendance of at least 100 students.

The credit union received more than 250 scholarship applications, including applicants from 26 of the 34 qualified high schools within New London and Windham counties. In addition to Charter Oak's $90,000 scholarship giveaway, its employees awarded two separate scholarships through the employee-funded Community Outreach Program.

Westerly Community Credit Union Teacher Grant Program will once again be awarding $7,000 in grants, in values up to $500, for the upcoming 2018/19 school year. WCCU Teacher Grants are available to teachers, administrators or staff from Chariho, Narragansett, South Kingstown, Stonington and Westerly. Grant applications are available online at www.westerlyccu. com and must be submitted no later than Oct. 31.
