Defy Nature takes decidedly different approach to cosmetic treatments

- By Karin Crompton

Remember that time you got all the sleep you wanted and woke up to a fresh face, free from dark circles or crow’s feet, glowing and healthy? Neither do we. In reality, a good number of us are a bit sleep-deprived or have seen a little too much sun. And when we hit our 30s, we start to lose a collagen in our faces, necks and chests as well, which leads to sagging skin.

A little boost could be nice – which is exactly what Defy Nature in New London offers. A medical spa located on Ocean Avenue, Defy Nature offers a number of nonsurgical treatments designed to help men and women look and feel their best.

Many clients want to address those fine lines around the lips or between the eyebrows, firm up a sagging neck, redefine the cheekbones, or add fullness to the mouth.

What they won’t get are duck lips or a treatment that leaves them looking like someone else.

“We’re very conservative here,” said business co-owner and founder Erin Azia, a Skin Specialist and certified laser technician. “We don’t want anybody looking like they’ve had anything done. We want you to look like a better, well rested version of yourself.”

Azia and her husband, Gregory Azia, MD, opened Defy Nature seven years ago. Gregory Azia is in solo practice

in New London, where he specializes in general, laparoscopic, vascular, and breast surgery. He serves as the Medical Director for Defy Nature.

Defy Nature is a nonsurgical aesthetics center whose services include skin rejuvenation; wrinkle fillers and injectables; antiaging; laser hair removal; chemical peels; radio frequency and home skin care maintenance.

And while every business owner touts their practice, Azia goes just a little further.

“I know we’re really good at it,” she said, “because I’m an actual client.”

Azia personally tests all the products and services to validate them; and, as she points out, there are benefits to changing up one’s skin care routine. “We are all aging everyday so our skin changes over time. It is important to re-evaluate your daily routine to receive optimal results by a skin-care professional”.

Defy Nature’s treatments range from topicals and injections to laser treatments and radio frequency ablation. One service, called e-Matrix, uses radio frequency to heat cells below the surface and stimulates cell renewal and collagen; this is good for minimizing the appearance of acne scarring and fine lines and wrinkles, in particular. Another procedure, called Gentle Max Laser, stimulates collagen underneath the skin in a non-invasive skin tightening treatment.

The fillers include hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that works with your body to help add lost volume back into your skin. And the company also offers at-home medical grade skin care products that are only available in a doctor’s office. Azia said it’s important that clients continue with a good regimen after having a procedure to get the best results. She and her staff take pride in helping people get the best, longest lasting outcome.

Most treatments take between half an hour and an hour to administer and last from 10 to 18 months, though Defy Nature also offers their very popular treatment called Bellafill, which is a new 5-year filler.

Potential clients receive a personalized, complimentary consultation with a registered nurse, Kristin Kenny, who outlines a treatment plan and the costs.

Kenny said clients are asked to fill out

a questionnaire and share their concerns in order of importance. She is then able to come up with a strategy to improve appearance overall. Often, she explained, sagging in the lower parts of the face can be corrected with a treatment higher up – for example, introducing some cosmetic filler in the midface area to correct nasolabial folds (or “laugh lines”).

“That problem or symptom you’re seeing is a result of midface volume loss,” Kenny said.

And, like Azia, Kenny emphasizes that Defy Nature’s therapeutic approach is effective, but conservative. No one leaves the office with an “unnatural look,” she said.

“A lot of men and women express the fear that people will ‘know they had work done,’” Kenny said. “But the results are very natural. My goal is to just to make you look a lot more refreshed, less tiredlooking, and the best you can be.”

The office sees clients of all ages – some as young as teens and early 20s – and quite a few men, too, whether it’s for laser hair removal or lip augmentation. Medical Front Desk Manager Terrie Grabowski said a lot of their male clients work in fields where they find themselves competing with younger workers and “they want to maintain a more youthful appearance to up that competitive edge.”

Regardless of the motivation to seek treatment, the staff focus on making each process a pleasant one.

“We just hope everyone feels comfortable here,” Grabowski said. “We welcome everyone; we want everyone to come down and check us out and see what we have to offer and take advantage of that complimentary consultation.” Many walk out relieved. Azia says the most common feedback she receives is: “I look like myself, I just look a little better.”
