Niantic — Alice “Wanda” Owen, 87, of Niantic, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 11, 2018, at Bride Brook. She was born on Oct. 6, 1930, in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of Vincent and Wilimena (Steele) Adams.

Prior to coming to the United States, Wanda had worked for the Canadian Red Cross for several years. Her love of sun and sand brought her to Old Orchard Beach, Maine, in 1957, and that is where she met who would turn out to be the love of her life, Lloyd Owen, telling her the day they met that he was going to marry her. Together they spent 48 years before his passing in 2006.

Being the kind and gentle woman that she was, she spent her entire life caring for others and had worked for the Visiting Nurses Association of Groton for 20 years. She was always graceful in everything she did and had a great sense of humor. She will be missed by so many who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her sons, Peter (Joyce) Owen, James (Angie) Owen, and Philip (Lisa) Owen; daughters Susan (John) Abel, and Dala (Stan) Grabowski; brothers Vincent and Anthony Adams; sisters Shirley Couture, Judy Davis, and Linda Walker; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and her daughter-in-law Audrey Owen. She was predeceased by her son, Scott Owen, and her sister, Rosemarie Jennings.

The family would like to thank Bride Brook nursing home for their outstanding service and care for Wanda during her stay.

Memorial calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. Burial is private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Wanda’s memory may be made to Bride Brook Nursing Home, 23 Liberty Way, Niantic, CT 06357. Please visit www. byles.com for directions or to sign the guestbook.
