Vermont beats Tigers on bases-loaded walk

Burlington, Vt. — Jesus Lage walked with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give the Vermont Lake Monsters a 5-4 victory over the Connecticu­t Tigers in the completion of a suspended New York-Penn League baseball game on Tuesday night.

The game was suspended after just seven pitches on Monday due to rain. The regular-scheduled second game ended too late for this edition.

With two outs and nobody on, Payton Squier tripled and the Tigers (2-2) intentiona­lly walked two batters to load the bases, but losing pitcher Jhonny Mateo walked Lage and Squier trotted home to score the game-winning run.

Cesar Gonzalez had two of Connecticu­t's four hits, going 2-for-3 and scoring twice, while Jose King added a tworun double in the fourth.

• Greg Hardison hit a tworun homer to lift the Upper Valley Nighthawks to a 4-1 victory over the Mystic Schooners in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Fitch High School. The Nighthawks are 8-3. Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) had two of the four hits for Mystic (5-7) and raised his average to .391.

Junior Legion Zone 6

• Niantic was beaten by Jewett City 4-2 in a Junior Legion Zone 7 game at Griswold. Alex Fraser had a triple and scored a run for Niantic.

District 10 (11-12) softball

• Pawcatuck defeated Montville 31-23 on Monday night. As winning pitcher Brianne Plew drove in two runs, Carissa Church had four runs, five RBI and a double, Maggie Thomas had a double and two RBI, and Caroline Sanford, Kelsea Anderson and Camerin Brown each had a single and one RBI. Nadya Wynn had a single, double and scored three runs for Montville while Ellyce Lynes singles and scored four runs.

• Waterford defeated Lyme/ Old Lyme 7-0 on Saturday night night as Emilia Podeszwa hit a three-run homer and winning pitcher Anna Dziecinny struck out nine while adding three hits, including two doubles, while Marina Colonis and Grace Muti added doubles.

• No. 1 Groton/Mystic will play No. 4 East Lyme at 5 p.m. Saturday and No. 2 Waterford plays No. 3 Lyme/Old Lyme will follow in the semifinals.
