Groton — Lillian Zabinsky, 88, of Groton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at Mystic Healthcare, surrounded by her loving family.

Lillian is survived by her daughter, Arlene Bohn and her husband, Gary Bohn, of Ledyard; son, Neil Zabinsky of Groton; and grandson, Simon Bohn, who is studying at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.

Born on Dec. 17, 1929, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Lillian was the daughter of the late Nathan and Sophie (Coopersmith) Singer. Lillian was a beloved and devoted wife of Samuel Zabinsky. Lillian and Sam were the world to each other and had 69 wonderful years of happiness together before Sam’s passing last year.

Lillian moved to Lido Beach when she was 37, where she and Sam raised their family. Lillian cherished living by the ocean on the south shore of Long Island and took easily to the carefree life at the beach. In her free time, she would be reading a newspaper or a novel, or knitting sweaters for her daughter. Lillian loved having weekly mahjong games with her friends, going on cruises, traveling and eating out. Later in life, she enjoyed her parttime job as a demonstrator at local supermarkets. When she was in her mid 70s, upon Sam’s second retirement, the Zabinskys moved together to Groton, to be near Arlene and her family.

Lillian was a dutiful, caring and thoughtful mother and grandmother. She was devoted to caring for her adult child throughout his life and was passionate about her daughter having the life that she thought she deserved. She especially looked forward to spending time with her grandson, who brought a special joy to her life.

Lillian was always optimistic and had a wonderful outlook on life. She never had a bad day or any complaints. She had a good long life and left us on her terms, when she was ready. She was very loved.

A celebration of her life will be held at a graveside service at 10 a.m. today, Friday, June 29, 2018 at NHBA (Norwich Hebrew Benevolent Assn.) Cemetery #3, 62 Middle Road, Preston. The family will greet relatives and friends after the service until 2 p.m., at 11 York Court in Ledyard.
