Heat, humidity prompt power alert from NPU
Norwich — Norwich Public Utilities issued a power alert between noon and 8 p.m. Monday in response to the high temperatures and humidity, and the request to reduce power usage during peak hours is expected to remain in place for the rest of the week.
“With temperatures likely reaching into the 90s today and in the days ahead, demand for electricity by NPU customers has increased significantly,” NPU officials wrote in an email announcing the alert. “By encouraging energy efficiency, NPU hopes to decrease the impact on its electrical infrastructure while the high temperatures persist.”
Because a portion of NPU’s annual costs for electricity are based on “peak demand” days, decreasing energy use during peak times helps to keep overall electric costs lower throughout the year, NPU officials said.
“It is very important that our customers — both residential and commercial — use power wisely today and through the end of the week to reduce the strain on our equipment in the field,” said NPU General Manager John Bilda. “Making a few small adjustments in your home or business can make a big difference.”
NPU issued energy reduction tips:
Only run a window air conditioning unit when someone is home. NPU recommends setting a central air system to 73 degrees.
Wait until after 6 p.m. to use major appliances, including dishwasher or clothes dryer.
Wait until after 6 p.m. to use appliances that generate heat, such as computers, curling irons and hair dryers, stereos, and televisions, all of which add to the heat in the home.
Avoid using the oven. Consider using a stove, microwave or grilling outside.
Install energy efficient lighting that runs much cooler than traditional lighting. Only about 10-15 percent of the electricity that incandescent lightbulbs use results in light. The rest is turned to heat.
Install window coverings to minimize the heat coming into a home or business.
